{"id":850210,"date":"2026-03-25T22:10:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T22:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/850210\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T22:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T22:10:13","slug":"australia-trade-deal-brings-back-macrons-mercosur-nightmare-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/850210\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia trade deal brings back Macron\u2019s Mercosur nightmare \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;We want France to block this agreement,&#8221; said cattle farmer Patrick B\u00e9n\u00e9zit, vice president of FNSEA, slamming European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for sealing the deal and the French government for not opposing it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know how she [von der Leyen] functions, nothing surprises us anymore: What surprises us is the lack of political response, particularly from governments,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to POLITICO on Wednesday, Trade Minister Nicolas Forissier said &#8220;the EU\u2013Australia agreement is a balanced and demanding partnership&#8221; and announced he would travel to Australia at the end of April with a delegation of French small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>His comment breaks the silence of the French government on the trade deal, which von der Leyen signed in Canberra on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are killing European agriculture,&#8221; said Manon Aubry, an MEP from Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon\u2019s far-left France Unbowed Party, calling the deal &#8220;a scandal&#8221; and announcing she would explore all tools to stop it, including an action before the Court of Justice of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar fights<\/p>\n<p>The impact of the deal, which would gradually<strong> <\/strong>allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/australia-eu-sign-free-trade-deal-ursula-von-der-leyen-anthony-albanese-export-boost\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30,600 metric tons<\/a> of Australian beef into Europe each year,\u00a0up from the current 3,389 tons, will likely be smaller than that of the Mercosur pact.
