The U.S. Department of Agriculture launched a nationwide campaign to promote a new \u201cProduct of USA\u201d label for meat, poultry, and eggs.<\/p>\n

The voluntary label, effective January 1, is only for products from animals that were born, raised, slaughtered, and processed entirely in the United States.<\/p>\n

USDA officials say this change closes a loophole that let some imported products use a U.S. label after only minor domestic processing.<\/p>\n

The department says the new standard gives consumers clearer information about where their food comes from and helps American farmers and ranchers compete more fairly.<\/p>\n

The campaign comes as the number of family farms falls and the U.S. cattle herd is at a 75-year low.<\/p>\n
