A MOTHER of two who started running last autumn has signed up to the Edinburgh half marathon in May to raise funds for the Shetland Heart Screening initiative.<\/p>\n

Jodie McShane, from Brae, has been a keen fundraiser for many years but felt she needed to do \u201csomething bigger this time\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old started on the popular Couch to 5k app only in October and has now increased the frequency of her training to three to four times a week to gain the strength and endurance needed for the 13-mile challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am hoping to raise money for Shetland Heart Screening (John Pirie Memorial Fund) who aim to provide free heart screening by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to raise as much as she can, Jodie has set up an online auction through which she hopes to raise enough to at least match what she is raising through her JustGiving page.<\/p>\n

The Edinburgh Marathon Festival takes place on 24 May, while the Shetland Heart Screening charity has announced a cardiac screening event in the isles for the same weekend.<\/p>\n
