{"id":852180,"date":"2026-03-26T19:05:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T19:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/852180\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T19:05:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T19:05:10","slug":"crime-in-croydon-is-down-according-to-new-statistics-but-some-residents-are-sceptical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/852180\/","title":{"rendered":"Crime in Croydon is down, according to new statistics &#8211;\u00a0but some residents are\u00a0sceptical\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New figures from the Metropolitan Police show that crime in Croydon has fallen\u00a0by 4.1% in the last year, but residents\u00a0are\u00a0sceptical\u00a0over whether this is indicative of real change.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The figures\u00a0found that since 2023, there has been a notable reduction in some of the most serious offences such as knife crime and personal robbery,\u00a0which are down 24% and 29% respectfully.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Croydon Council\u00a0have pointed to this as a sign that the council\u2019s tougher, more\u00a0partnership-led approach to\u00a0tackling crime\u00a0is working,\u00a0but some residents\u00a0are not convinced\u00a0anything has changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Telecoms Engineer, James Dedman, 41, said:\u00a0\u201cI have lived in Croydon\u00a0all my life, and I feel like I have watched it in a steady decline.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dedman\u00a0denied seeing any\u00a0reduction in crime\u00a0in Croydon in\u00a0recent years\u00a0and believes the figures are\u00a0being misconstrued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dedman suggested that the figures were the result of fewer people being out in Croydon and a\u00a0general\u00a0reluctance to report crimes, rather than a genuine decrease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dedman said: \u201cPeople don\u2019t bother reporting things anymore because what are the police going to do, they just don\u2019t have the resources.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the new figures, Dedman, a father of three,\u00a0is not convinced that the streets of Croydon\u00a0are any safer and said violence is still an issue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dedman said:\u00a0\u201cThere isn\u2019t a\u00a0person alive who can tell me violent crime has dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019m okay because I know how to handle myself, but I wouldn\u2019t feel safe if I were\u00a0a 21-year-old female walking home at 10 in the night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Social media comments suggest that Dedman is one of many residents who\u00a0are\u00a0sceptical\u00a0that the new figures actually indicate a true reduction in crime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0Facebook commenter said:\u00a0\u201cReported crime,\u00a0might be down.
