{"id":853635,"date":"2026-03-27T10:38:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T10:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/853635\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T10:38:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T10:38:27","slug":"citizenship-granted-to-almost-1-2-million-people-in-2024-news-articles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/853635\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizenship granted to almost 1.2 million people in 2024 &#8211; News articles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In 2024, nearly 1.2 million people acquired the <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Citizenship\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">citizenship <\/a>of the <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php\/Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EU <\/a>country where they lived, an increase of 11.6% (+122 700 people) compared with 2023. The number of citizenships granted jumped by 54.5% compared with 2014, when a total of 762 100 were attributed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">The majority of these new citizenships were granted by Germany (288 700; 24.5% of the EU total), Spain (252 500; 21.4%) and Italy (217 400; 18.5%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">Most recipients (88.0%) were from non-EU countries, while citizens from other EU countries accounted for 10.6%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">This information comes from <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/migration-asylum\/international-migration-citizenship\/database\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data <\/a>on the acquisition of citizenship published by Eurostat today. This article presents just a handful of findings from the more detailed <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Acquisition_of_citizenship_statistics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Statistics Explained article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Syrians, Moroccans and Albanians top 3 recipients<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In 2024, as in the year before, Syrian nationals were the largest group of new EU citizens, with 110 100 new citizenships granted.
