{"id":854854,"date":"2026-03-27T23:33:19","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T23:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/854854\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T23:33:19","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T23:33:19","slug":"parkinsons-link-to-gut-bacteria-hints-at-unexpectedly-simple-treatment-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/854854\/","title":{"rendered":"Parkinson&#8217;s Link to Gut Bacteria Hints at Unexpectedly Simple Treatment : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have suspected for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-evidence-suggests-parkinson-s-might-start-in-the-gut-before-spreading-to-the-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some time<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cheap-daily-supplement-appears-to-boost-brain-function-in-older-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link between our gut and brain<\/a> plays a role in the onset of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"196279\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> disease.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research adds further evidence to the link, identifying gut microbes likely to be involved and linking them with decreased <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riboflavin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riboflavin<\/a> ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-are-vitamins-and-do-we-really-need-to-take-them\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73116\" data-postid=\"196279\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">vitamin<\/a> B2) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biotin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biotin<\/a> (vitamin B7).<\/p>\n<p>The discovery suggests an unexpectedly <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9wuwZbPf0Vs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple treatment that may help<\/a>: B  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-are-vitamins-and-do-we-really-need-to-take-them\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73116\" data-postid=\"196279\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">vitamins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Supplementation therapy targeting riboflavin and biotin holds promise as a potential therapeutic avenue for alleviating Parkinson&#8217;s symptoms and slowing disease progression,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/news\/articles\/research_information_215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> medical researcher Hiroshi Nishiwaki from Nagoya University in Japan, when the study was published in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The neurodegenerative disease impacts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkinson.org\/understanding-parkinsons\/what-is-parkinsons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around 10 million people globally<\/a>, who at best can hope for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-is-the-first-time-drug-shows-signs-of-slowing-parkinsons-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">therapies that slow and alleviate symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms typically begin with constipation and sleep problems, up to 20 years before progressing into dementia and the debilitating loss of muscle control.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the video below for a summary of the research:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774654393_416_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/changes-in-gut-bacteria-are-present-long-before-signs-of-parkinsons-appear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Previous research<\/a> found people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease also experience changes in their microbiome long before other signs appear.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing fecal samples from 94 patients with Parkinson&#8217;s disease and 73 relatively healthy controls in Japan, Nishiwaki and colleagues compared their results with data from China, Taiwan, Germany, and the US.<\/p>\n<p>While different groups of bacteria were involved in the different countries examined, they all influenced pathways that synthesize B vitamins in the body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team found that the changes in gut bacteria communities were associated with a decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riboflavin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riboflavin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biotin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biotin<\/a> in people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers then showed the lack of B vitamins was linked to a decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Short-chain_fatty_acid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short-chain fatty acids<\/a> (SCFAs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polyamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polyamines<\/a>: molecules that help create a healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/theres-a-hidden-danger-in-swallowing-pills-expert-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mucus layer in the intestines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deficiencies in polyamines and SCFAs could lead to thinning of the intestinal mucus layer, increasing intestinal permeability, both of which have been observed in Parkinson&#8217;s disease,&#8221; Nishiwaki <a href=\"https:\/\/en.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/news\/articles\/research_information_215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GraphicOfParkinsonsVitaminBConnection642.jpg\" alt=\"A graphic depicting the process of gut bacteria depleting B vitamins and leading to symptoms of Parkinson's disease\" width=\"642\" height=\"950\" class=\"wp-image-131227 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Summary of findings from the study and speculations from previous research. (Nishiwaki et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41531-024-00724-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">npj Parkinson&#8217;s Dis.<\/a>, 2024)<\/p>\n<p>They suspect the weakened protective layer exposes the intestinal nervous system to more of the toxins we now encounter more regularly.<\/p>\n<p>These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dry-cleaning-chemical-could-be-major-cause-of-parkinsons-scientists-warn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cleaning chemicals,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/two-pathways-to-parkinsons-could-point-to-a-single-way-to-prevent-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pesticides<\/a>, and herbicides.<\/p>\n<p>Such toxins lead to the overproduction of \u03b1-synuclein fibrils \u2013 molecules <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.nbd.2024.106411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known to amass<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-test-detects-parkinsons-7-years-before-most-symptoms-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dopamine-producing cells<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-pinpoint-exactly-which-brain-cells-die-in-parkinson-s-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substantia nigra<\/a> part of our brains \u2013 and increased nervous system inflammation, eventually leading to the more debilitating motor and dementia symptoms of Parkinson&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/bjmbr\/a\/BM4WLJBtjxF8Cx3wFsjFhKb\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2003 study<\/a> found high doses of riboflavin can assist in recovering some motor functions in patients who also eliminated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/decades-long-study-links-red-meat-to-up-to-13-higher-dementia-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">red meat from their diets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s possible that high doses of vitamin B may prevent some of the damage, Nishiwaki and team propose.<\/p>\n<p>This all suggests healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/beyond-the-gut-microbes-found-in-healthy-brains-raising-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gut microbiomes<\/a> may also prove protective, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/controversial-new-study-links-parkinsons-with-living-near-a-golf-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reducing the toxic pollutants<\/a> in our environment may help too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ParkinsonsGutBVitamins642.jpg\" alt=\"Graphic of human gut-brain connection and B vitamins\" width=\"642\" height=\"442\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145467\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>In Parkinson&#8217;s disease, a reduction in the gut bacteria of genes responsible for synthesizing the essential B vitamins B2 and B7 was found. (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/news\/articles\/research_information_215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reiko Matsushita<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are constantly discovering more ways <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/fragments-of-bacteria-in-our-gut-may-lull-our-brains-to-sleep-at-night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the makeup of our gut bacteria affects our health<\/a>. The composition is not fixed: It varies depending on many factors, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/yo-yo-dieting-may-trigger-long-lasting-changes-in-gut-bacteria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what you eat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gut-bacteria-might-actually-reveal-how-old-you-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your age<\/a>, and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-childs-gut-health-benefits-from-an-early-bedtime-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleep quality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t all respond to the same diets in the same way either, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-guts-methane-making-microbes-could-secretly-turn-fiber-into-extra-calories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent discovery helps explain why<\/a>: Gut microbes that naturally produce more methane are also able to squeeze more energy and calories out of high-fiber foods.<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/unusual-activity-in-our-guts-could-have-helped-our-brains-grow-larger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-of-over-400000-people-links-gut-bacteria-with-insomnia-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2025, scientists in China and the US<\/a> found that being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cognitive-shuffling-really-could-help-insomniacs-get-to-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unable to sleep at night<\/a> could be at least partly down to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-people-in-your-life-are-sharing-their-gut-microbes-with-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mix of microbes<\/a> in our digestive system.<\/p>\n<p>Also this year, researchers found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gut-bacteria-found-to-soak-up-toxic-forever-chemicals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some bacteria in our guts can absorb and store<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PFAS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances<\/a> (PFAS), often called &#8216;forever chemicals&#8217; for how long they linger in the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that certain species of human gut bacteria have a remarkably high capacity to soak up PFAS from their environment at a range of concentrations, and store these in clumps inside their cells,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/gut-microbes-could-protect-us-from-toxic-forever-chemicals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> University of Cambridge molecular biologist Kiran Patil.<\/p>\n<p>In theory, boosting these microbes could help reduce PFAS&#8217;s harmful effects on our health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-disease-could-be-ignited-by-burned-out-brain-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parkinson&#8217;s Disease Could Be Ignited by Burned-Out Brain Cells<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, in most conditions, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-identifies-gut-microbe-imbalances-that-predict-autism-and-adhd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gut microbiome&#8217;s influence<\/a> is just one part of the full story.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SHakingHandPIckingUpGlass-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hands picking up a glass\" width=\"642\" height=\"500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-131231\"  \/>Parkinson&#8217;s disease impacts around 10 million people globally.
