Rachel Reeves has insisted that Donald Trump\u2019s global trade war<\/a> has made it even more \u201cimperative\u201d for the UK to improve post-Brexit<\/a> trading relations with the EU. The Chancellor wants Britain to achieve an ambitious economic agenda in EU\/UK \u201creset\u201d talks.<\/p>\n

But the government continues to rule out any move to rejoin the EU customs union.<\/p>\n

Ms Reeves made the comments ahead of a crucial summit with EU leaders in London on May 19.<\/p>\n

Ms Reeves said: \u201cSince Brexit<\/a>, it has been harder for British firms to export around Europe, particularly smaller firms. Many feel shut out of European markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel that in the current environment, there is a greater willingness from countries around the world to look at both tariff and non-tariff barriers that are holding back trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of the developments, whether it is Russia<\/a>\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a> or the challenges in global trade at the moment, mean that there\u2019s an even greater imperative to improve our trading relationships with Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Reeves also argued the UK-EU summit would be an opportunity to \u201crefresh our relationship and make it easier for businesses to trade\u201d, with \u201cpartners in Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n

She insisted she would seek to negotiate a US trade deal in Washington later this month for the IMF global finance ministers meeting.<\/p>\n

Referring to Donald Trump<\/a>‘s tariff blitz, Ms Reeves said: \u201cNo one wants to see a trade war. It\u2019s in no one\u2019s interest.<\/p>\n
