{"id":85610,"date":"2025-05-08T21:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T21:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/85610\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T21:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T21:17:10","slug":"the-year-long-roadworks-that-are-causing-massive-issues-for-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/85610\/","title":{"rendered":"The year-long roadworks that are causing MASSIVE issues for drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s another controversial city centre scheme<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1746739029_581_0_image0jpeg.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>(Image: UGC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Salford council has issued a statement after complaints that city centre roadworks set to last nearly a YEAR are causing \u201840 minute queues\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The council is installing new bike lanes, mode pedestrian areas, and spaces for buses on Chapel Street in what it calls a \u2018complete streets approach to rebalance the space in favour of pedestrians and cyclists\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The roadworks mean Chapel Street is closed westbound from its junction with Blackfriars Road to New Bailey Street, from May 5 until April 2026. The stretch of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/deansgate\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Deansgate<\/a> running parallel to the closed portion of Chapel Street is also largely closed to cars, meaning drivers need to use Trinity Way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But that\u2019s caused delays in the area, according to one local, who said on Thursday morning (May 8): \u201cDrivers are getting frustrated with being stuck in traffic as work begins for cycle lanes on Chapel Street and Blackfriars,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cSome drivers have been waiting in queues for over 40 minutes. Local residents are not able to get out. The emergency services have nowhere to go, it is chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In response to the complaints, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a> council has issued a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1_JS364732200.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>A view of how part of Chapel Street in Salford could look after a revamp. Uploaded by local democracy reporter Declan Carey.(Image: Salford council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A spokesperson said: \u201cSalford City Council recognise that any scheme of this scale is going to be disruptive, especially in the early stages while all road users get used to the new arrangements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe are working closely with Transport for Greater Manchester and constantly monitoring traffic flows in the area. Adjustments have been made to signals\u2019 operation at key junctions at Chapel Street\/Blackfriars Road, Trinity Way\/Blackfriars Road, and Trinity Way\/Chapel Street to ease the congestion issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhile we recognise there have been delays during peak times, we would like to reassure residents and all road users that the one-way closure on Chapel Street represents the best solution currently available to deliver the works safely and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe set up balances the needs of local residents and businesses whilst maintaining the operation of public transport and general traffic flow with a provision for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst providing an adequate space for the works in a built up and very constricted city centre environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe are working with the works\u2019 contractor to ensure the project is constructed in the shortest possible timeframe to minimise disruption. The works are part of a long-term plan to enhance the area and build high quality, safer pedestrian and cycling provision across the city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cPublic realm improvements will see the installation of rain gardens, planting beds and new trees introduced.
