{"id":85642,"date":"2025-05-08T21:34:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T21:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/85642\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T21:34:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T21:34:14","slug":"us-military-to-export-high-risk-explosives-to-australian-ports-amid-arms-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/85642\/","title":{"rendered":"US military to export &#8216;high-risk&#8217; explosives to Australian ports amid arms expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Subcontractors in at least four Australian ports will soon handle United States military cargo containing gases and radioactive material, as part of an expanded contract with the US government, the ABC can reveal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The US Department of Defence is currently seeking tenders for port services in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria, where it expects &#8220;indefinite quantities&#8221; of explosives, aircraft, classified and general cargo to be unloaded from ships and onto trucks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The tender solicitation issued by a US transportation battalion based in Yokohama, Japan, covers the handling of cargo shipped to and from Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An Australian Defence Force (ADF) spokesperson said shipments &#8220;were necessary to enable and support US exercises and activities in Australia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US Port Operations Darwin Talisman Sabre 2023 Credit US Army\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/a106793be5c1923a6e2daf7b55a35d91\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">US Army trucks have previously been shipped to the Port of Darwin for joint military exercises. (Supplied: US Army)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ADF did not respond to questions about whether the cargo was also intended for Australian military use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Similar shipments into Australian ports are currently handled by German company EMS Shipping and Trading, as part of a $3.1 million contract awarded in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the US Military Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) says a new contract extending to 2030 will replace it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The contract is currently valued at $346,500, however that amount isn\u2019t finalised and is expected to increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement to bidders, USTRANSCOM said additional payments would be made weekly via &#8220;task orders&#8221; throughout the life of the contract. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Twenty tonne containers of &#8220;explosives cargo&#8221; have been added to shipping manifests on the new contract, and in an attached statement to prospective contractors, USTRANSCOM said those containers &#8220;include gases, or radioactive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">USTRANSCOM said contractors would be expected to comply with US laws around the handling of ammunition and explosives, including &#8220;rockets, missiles, warheads and devices&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Marles tour of Point Wilson Wharf reopening 2023 Credit ADF\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/d5af7a45efbb1cfa39518e6a8f70162d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Defence Minister Richard Marles (centre) toured the Point Wilson wharf at its reopening in 2023. (ABC: Dane Hirst)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;While the contract itself doesn&#8217;t specify end use, the inclusion of high-risk cargo types and expanded port access is consistent with broader trends we&#8217;re seeing under AUKUS and allied posture initiatives,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The relatively low contract value isn&#8217;t unusual for an indefinite delivery set up.
