(ABC Rural: Aimee Mitchell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The highly venomous Irukandji is found in Australia&#8217;s warm tropical waters between November and May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They are almost invisible and there is a delay between contact and the searing pain, so most people will not immediately realise when they have been stung.<\/p>\n<p>What does an Irukandji sting feel like?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After spending Christmas morning snorkelling, Dr Cipollone and her friends stopped their boat to flick lures at tuna before jumping &#8220;in and out&#8221; of the water to escape the stifling heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She did not bother putting back on the spandex stinger suit she was wearing earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Cipollone said her back started to hurt about 15 minutes later, by the boat ramp, and she assumed it was a muscle strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, I got down on the ground to just stretch out my back and then I couldn&#8217;t get back up,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;My legs didn&#8217;t work anymore.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tiny jellyfish in tank next the tip of a finger\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/13e6da5b92f619402d9a10d3e5c7c2b9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Irukandji stings can cause feelings of &#8220;impending doom&#8221; and anxiety. (ABC News: Sharnie Kim)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">About 40 minutes after swimming, Dr Cipollone began to realise she had been stung when she could no longer put any pressure on her back due to the intense pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And then rolling over onto my side and I&#8217;m hyperventilating and I&#8217;m panicking,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She called an ambulance and was treated in Proserpine Hospital with painkillers until her symptoms began to fade hours later.<\/p>\n<p>How does an Irukandji jellyfish sting work?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Marine biologist Lisa-ann Gershwin, who has studied the species for more than 20 years, said a tiny drop of venom was enough to deliver incredible pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They have little, tiny, microscopic stinging cells inside, embedded in the surface of the tentacles,&#8221; Dr Gershwin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Each stinging cell is basically a little capsule with a harpoon coiled up inside and a hair trigger at one end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And inside the stinging cell and inside the harpoon, it is the venom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with long dark hair and dark-framed spectacles poses for a photo on a harbour, next to a red car, holding her small dog\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/5e0b9678ec7748f19daa79646348ad10.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lisa-ann Gershwin has studied jellyfish for decades. (ABC TV: Compass)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When triggered by contact, the tiny &#8220;harpoon&#8221; can fly out at 40,000 times the force of gravity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Either you don&#8217;t feel it at all, or it&#8217;s really so minor that you just dismiss it,&#8221; Dr Gershwin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said painful symptoms generally developed between five and 45 minutes after the initial sting.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;People describe it as feeling like an electric drill is drilling into the back or like they&#8217;re being hit with a cricket bat again and again. (ABC Tropical North: Bryn Wakefield)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you get into distress or you need some help, there&#8217;s always Triple Zero (000),&#8221; Dr Gill said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Just present to either the hospital or your nearest medical practitioner if you&#8217;ve got questions or [need] advice just call for help early.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said dousing the affected area with vinegar was also important to neutralise the stinging cells so that they did not inject any more venom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Even if it&#8217;s just a minor sting and you don&#8217;t know what it is, just whack it with vinegar,&#8221; Dr Gershwin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><strong>Symptoms of an Irukandji Sting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowVisible__N2zKU\">\n<li>A skin reaction similar to goose bumps<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue or weakness<\/li>\n<li>Severe limb, back or abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Sweating<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal heart rate<\/li>\n<li>A feeling of &#8220;impending doom&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In extreme cases, high blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sarah Cipollone is used to dealing with pain.
