Scott Walker<\/a> knew more than most how to wrestle stark poignancy from the human condition\u2019s most abyssal depths.<\/p>\n

Not that such thematic explorations were ever clear. After the slow journey from the Walker Brothers\u2019 pop sensation, the Scott series\u2019 baroque compositions, and a glut of awful 1970s albums, Walker\u2019s true creative calling began to rear its head in the 1980s. First flashed on Nite Flights\u2019 \u2018The Electrician\u2019, the \u201cGodlike Genius\u201d mythos began in earnest, struck with 1984\u2019s Climate of Hunter\u2019s chilly atmospheres before the cavernous, industrial clangour of Tilt over a decade later.<\/p>\n

Such intrepid soundscapes were matched with an equally bold lyrical canvas. 17 months in gestation, The Drift finally saw the light of day in 2006, another plumb of excavating darkness shrouded in subterranean rumble and orchestral horror, packed with greater snarling bite than anything Walker had dreamed up yet.<\/p>\n

A perusal through The Drift\u2019s CD booklet flashed the same cryptic lyrical intrigues accompanied by short captions revealing some hint to a song\u2019s subject matter, from speeches by Bosnian Serb war criminal Radovan Karad\u017ei\u0107 to the affliction of psoriasis in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u2018Jesse\u2019 which offers the most arresting text. Alongside \u201cNose holes caked in black cocaine\u201d and \u201cSix feet of foetus \/ Flung at sparrows in the sky\u201d, a short caption alleges that, in times of loneliness and despair, Elvis Presley<\/a> would talk to his stillborn twin brother Jesse.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a rumour that\u2019s long been the source of fascination for biographers and Presley researchers. Born 35 minutes before Elvis on January 1935 and later buried in a shoebox in Mississippi\u2019s Tupelo, Jesse Garon Presley reportedly held a lifelong hold on Presley, speculated to have instilled a survivor\u2019s guilt and offered some sense of psychological companionship as the \u2018King\u2019 retreated into his own creatively stagnant isolation. It\u2019s even understood Presley would visit Jesse\u2019s grave to talk.<\/p>\n

Some in Presley\u2019s life have dismissed such legends as fiction; his famous \u2018Memphis Mafia\u2019 entourage reportedly never spotted any kind of brotherly presence in Presley\u2019s life, but hair stylist and confidante Larry Geller spoke frankly of Presley\u2019s affinity with his stillborn sibling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell ya, Larry, being a twin has always been a mystery for me,\u201d Geller once recalled Presley saying. \u201cI mean, we were in our mother\u2019s womb together, so why was he born dead and not me? He never even got his chance to live. Think about it, why me? Why was I the one that was chosen? An\u2019 I\u2019ve always wondered what would\u2019ve been if he had lived, I really have. These kinds of questions tear my head up. There\u2019s got to be reasons for all this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somehow, Walker also views the turmoil of 9\/11<\/a> through the lens of Presley\u2019s anguished psyche at the loss of his older brother, all adding to The Drift\u2019s fascinating obscurities. Piercing through the \u2018King\u2019s rock and roll stature, Walker conjured a dark and unsettling examination of Presley\u2019s wounded humanity and offers a wholly plausible inner machination of what pulled Presley to an eventual spiritual oblivion.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
