{"id":858213,"date":"2026-03-29T12:39:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T12:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/858213\/"},"modified":"2026-03-29T12:39:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T12:39:13","slug":"french-mayors-reignite-streetlights-to-enhance-safety-and-mobility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/858213\/","title":{"rendered":"French mayors reignite streetlights to enhance safety and mobility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    Energy-saving policy introduced during the 2022 surge in electricity prices<\/p>\n<p>\n        Thousands of communes across France reduced or entirely switched off street lighting in 2022 during the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine<br \/>\n        bacnaria \/ Shutterstock\n    <\/p>\n<p> A growing number of newly elected mayors in France are moving swiftly to restore overnight street lighting, marking a shift away from energy-saving policies introduced during the 2022 surge in electricity prices.<\/p>\n<p>In several towns, the return of public lighting has been framed as an immediate, symbolic act of governance, tied to concerns over safety, mobility and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>In Figeac (Lot),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.connexionfrance.com\/news\/find-out-who-has-been-elected-as-mayor-in-your-french-commune\/779447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> newly elected mayor<\/a> Philippe Landrein announced within hours of taking office that streetlights in the town centre would be switched back on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom this evening, we will put the light back in the streets,\u201d he told councillors during the first municipal meeting of his term, signalling a rapid move \u201ctowards action\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Similar decisions have been taken elsewhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Torcy (Seine-et-Marne), the new municipal team confirmed that full-night lighting would resume across the town from March 30, reversing earlier cutbacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The measure was presented as a response to residents\u2019 expectations, particularly around security and everyday convenience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.connexionfrance.com\/news\/energy-costs-frances-mayors-warn-of-risk-to-public-services\/215597\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thousands of communes across France reduced or entirely switched off street lighting during the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, critics argued that darker streets increased feelings of insecurity and complicated night-time activity, from late work shifts to cultural events.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Torcy, local officials cited recent incidents where pedestrians leaving evening venues had to rely on mobile phone torches.<\/p>\n<p>Torcy estimates the additional annual cost at between \u20ac15,000 and \u20ac20,000, representing less than 0.1% of its municipal budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold italic m-italic\" data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Has the public lighting blackout affected you or do you not mind the streets being dark?
