case\u201dCredit: Alamy<\/p>\n<p>Her devastated mum Theresa Smith, 45, said staff at a scandal-hit superhospital were shouting at each other as the clergyman tried to bless her little girl Sophia before she died at just 12 days old.<\/p>\n<p>Newborn Sophia had been rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit at the Queen Elizabeth University campus in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/glasgow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow<\/a> with breathing difficulties and was placed in a medically induced coma.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa and husband Matthew, 55, were later told they would \u201chave to go fast\u201d to christen her ahead of a heart and lung bypass which was described as the \u201clast roll of the dice\u201d for the gravely ill tot.<\/p>\n<p>The family\u2019s heartache unfolded in April 2017 \u2014 two years after the opening of the \u00a3842million hub.<\/p>\n<p its water and ventilation probably caused infections that killed a string of patients, including kids.<\/p>\n<p>Grieving Theresa, from Greenock, told The Scottish Sun: \u201cI think about Sophia 300 times a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy baby died in my arms \u2014 the first time I had ever held her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had no idea how Sophia went from getting home to dying.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMost read in The Scottish Sun\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe eventually found out she had a hospital-acquired infection which ate her insides out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told the new campus was the likes we haven\u2019t seen before in this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were right \u2014 but not for the reasons they thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking her there was the biggest mistake of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recalling her daughter\u2019s chaotic christening, she told the Scottish Hospitals Inquiry: \u201cThe priest wanted water to bless but was told he couldn\u2019t have any from the tap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaff were jumping over the top of each other going, \u2018Water, where can we get water?\u2019 and shouting across the ward, \u2018Have you got a bottle of water?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking at the time, this is a multi-million-pound, brand new unit. Just get some water, it\u2019s not that difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaff were shouting that we needed to hurry this up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was stressed because someone\u2019s shouting to hurry up and get this done, and someone else is telling you they haven\u2019t got the water. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually we got a pot of sterile saline water and she was baptised with that really, really quickly. It was just, \u2018Father, Son, Holy Spirit \u2014 done. Go.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A fatal accident probe last October concluded the tot had died from a toxic MRSA strain not related to the QEUH.<\/p>\n<p>However, just four months later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hospital<\/a> bosses finally admitted a link between deadly bugs and its water system.<\/p>\n<p>Sophia\u2019s loved ones say were told the hospital\u2019s issue with water had been an \u201cisolated case\u201d which had \u201cnever happened before\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But neonatal unit consultant Dr Jonathan Coutts told the inquiry water fountains had been removed amid fears they could harbour bacteria which can cause serratia marcescens \u2014 which killed another premature baby at the unit in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Surgeons resorted to washing their hands with bottled liquid in a bid to avoid deadly infections.<\/p>\n<p>And staff were also ordered not to wash or shower patients \u2014 who were told not to drink from taps \u2014 while medics feared tainted water could be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Some 84 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">children<\/a> were struck by 118 infections in the four years after the QEUH\u2019s launch in April 2015.<\/p>\n<p>But records unearthed by the Scottish Sun show that water hygiene experts DMA Canyon raised serious concerns after site visits as early as winter 2014.<\/p>\n<p>A report by the firm found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">construction<\/a> debris in storage tanks, stagnant pipes that led nowhere, and filters being bypassed.<\/p>\n<p>Clinicians also later repeatedly voiced concerns over bugs, especially on wards where patients had weakened immune systems. <\/p>\n<p>SNP chiefs including First Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/who\/john-swinney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Swinney<\/a> have since denied NHS chiefs were pressured to open the campus \u2014 built to replace four ailing hospitals across Glasgow \u2014 before it was ready.<\/p>\n<p>John Cuddihy has spent a decade seeking answers after his daughter Molly died at QEUHCredit: John Cuddihy<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Stirrat contracted repeat infections and meningitis during brain cancer treatment at QEUHCredit: SWNS:South West News Service<\/p>\n<p>Professor John Cuddihy, 60, from Gourock, Renfrewshire, has spent a decade seeking answers over the cause of infections after his daughter Molly became ill while undergoing bone cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>She died in August aged 23 after first being treated at the hospital aged 15 then going on to raise more than \u00a3300,000 for patients.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Cuddihy said: \u201cI was powerless to treat my wee girl\u2019s cancer but I could try and find out the cause of the children\u2019s infections. I found out Molly\u2019s was caused by a bacteria so rare it had only been evidenced four times in ten years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s extremely difficult to grow it in a laboratory but was found on her ward when she moved and for years after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shocking evidence given to the ongoing Scottish Hospitals Inquiry revealed problems were repeatedly flagged, prompting supposed deep cleans, repairs and water bans.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\tDAMNING EVIDENCE\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Off-platform-pics-2026-03-29T221952.048.png\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-boxout__content__intro\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBy Chris Taylor\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>THE inquiry heard damning evidence of design and build flaws at hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Repeated concerns of staff and families were ignored \u2014 alongside expert survey reports on key environmental systems.<\/p>\n<p>A told of 186 witnesses told probe chair Lord Brodie of challenges at the QEUH in Glasgow and Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde pressed ahead with opening its hospital despite warnings over plumbing and ventilation systems.<\/p>\n<p>Bosses finally admitted a \u201ccasual link\u201d between the QEUH in January \u2014 five years after the \u00a330million inquiry began.<\/p>\n<p>Many people believe they will never know the absolute truth of what went on at both sites. <\/p>\n<p>Lord Brodie is expected to issue his findings later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Suspicious workers had also been warning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">families<\/a> to steer clear.<\/p>\n<p>Bulky tap filters prevented medics from carrying out proper cleansing and were found to have been removed from some outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Stirrat, 40, of Clydebank, near Glasgow, said her son Caleb, 10, contracted repeat infections and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/meningitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meningitis<\/a> during brain cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThe hospital was often dirty when we were there and there was no way of keeping immunocompromised kids away from other patients and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere would be terrible smells of sewage and my son got multiple infections and meningitis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like a third world country.
