Even more than that: as a young goalkeeper, he idolized Neuer. \u201cBut I realized it wasn\u2019t possible,\u201d Baumann told the \u201cSZ\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI simply don\u2019t have the skills he has,\u201d admitted the 35-year-old, who plays for TSG Hoffenheim. \u201cThis combination of size, speed, and agility is certainly unique.\u201d Neuer also has \u201ca very distinctive style of positioning and anticipation.\u201d Baumann can\u2019t copy that.<\/p>\n Describing himself as the \u201cbest Oli Baumann there has ever been,\u201d he feels his performances during the World Cup qualifying campaign have helped him earn that recognition.<\/p>\n \u201cI believe I\u2019ve already earned some respect during the World Cup qualifiers. By the time other teams do their opponent analysis at the World Cup, they\u2019ll see that this Baumann isn\u2019t too bad at all,\u201d he said, noting that his experience is a major advantage.<\/p>\n \u201cBasically, it\u2019s about making as few mistakes as possible over a career, and when you do make them, learning from them. I\u2019ve experienced nearly every situation and made almost every mistake by now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Overall, Baumann has been solid for Germany, but his performance against Switzerland during his squad\u2019s 4-3 victory did have some folks wondering if there might be a better option.
