{"id":859427,"date":"2026-03-30T02:21:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T02:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/859427\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T02:21:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T02:21:14","slug":"why-europes-social-democrats-cant-stop-losing-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/859427\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Europe\u2019s social democrats can\u2019t stop losing \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tobias Cremer, a German social democratic lawmaker in the European Parliament, said the announcement was spurred by the poor results in the regional elections, and showed the party was serious about delivering \u201con the bread and butter issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about economic growth, it is social justice, but it\u2019s also [about] reforming our economy in a way that it\u2019s for us to determine how we work, not for the White House, not for the Kremlin, not for China,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Trump bump<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One unlikely boost for Europe\u2019s center left has come from U.S. President Donald Trump, whose provocations have helped mobilize some voters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2268653324-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8190461\"  \/>One unlikely boost for Europe\u2019s center left has come from U.S. President Donald Trump. | Alex Wong\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>MEP Cremer said Denmark\u2019s Social Democrats, who have been in power since 2019, would likely have suffered an even worse defeat in the election had it not been for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-saved-mette-frederiksen-from-electoral-oblivion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voter sympathy<\/a> generated by Frederiksen\u2019s refusal to give in to Trump\u2019s threats to annex Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur comrades in Denmark did an outstanding job, they actually moved up in a lot of surveys from a much harder position they were in,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you have been in government \u2026 for years, it\u2019s very often that you are in a difficult situation, and they have already shown that, by standing up to Trump, but also in the domestic policy area, they manage to catch up quite a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Europe\u2019s center left knows it can\u2019t base its entire platform on anti-MAGA messaging. The way forward, some argue, is to follow the example set by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez.
