Chancellor Rachel Reeves aims for the fastest AI adoption in the G7 and a “Quantum leap” that could add over £200 billion to the economy, emphasising a strategic state role in the industries of the future

Centred on the “three big choices” for national growth—innovation, closer ties with Europe, and regional development—the strategy seeks to anchor the world’s most promising technology firms in Britain.

The plan includes a world-first commitment to rolling out quantum computers at scale, a move projected to create 100,000 jobs and generate £212 billion over the next two decades.

The “Sovereign AI” strategy: AI adoption

The government is moving away from a “market-only” approach to prevent AI benefits from being concentrated among a few global entities. A new £500 million Sovereign AI Fund will launch in April to provide British firms with the funding and “compute” power necessary to compete internationally.

Key AI adoption objectives:

Fastest G7 Adoption:

Implementing AI across the public and private sectors is quicker than in any other major economy.

Sovereign Capability:

Ensuring the UK shapes and owns the technology rather than relying on foreign models.

Startup Ecosystem:

Building on the fact that since 2020, more AI companies have been founded in Britain per capita than anywhere else in Europe.

The quantum leap

While AI is the technology of the current era, the Chancellor identified Quantum as the next generational leap. Unlike traditional computers, quantum systems can explore multiple solutions simultaneously, drastically reducing the time needed to solve complex problems in healthcare and energy.

The £2 billion quantum package includes:

Scalable Procurement:

A £1 billion program to purchase commercial-scale quantum computers, making the UK the first to prove large-scale market demand.

Research Hubs:

£13.8 million for five National Quantum Research Hubs focusing on clean energy and national security.

Commercialisation Skills:

£12 million for a specialised centre to help scientists translate laboratory breakthroughs into real-world business products.

Real-world impact and industry support

The investment is designed to deliver “cutting-edge public services” and high-paid jobs. Industry leaders, including CEOs from Riverlane and Oxford Quantum Circuits, have praised the move as a vital signal to private investors that the UK is committed to scaled technology rather than just theoretical research.

Anticipated Benefits:

Healthcare:

Using quantum sensors to improve diagnostics for conditions like childhood epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

Infrastructure:

Monitoring gas leaks across energy networks and removing reliance on satellite technology for transport navigation.

Economic renewal:

Strengthening ties with Europe while backing homegrown innovation to ensure the UK remains a global tech “magnet.”

        Editor’s Recommended Articles

image: ©akinbostanci| iStock The UK government has pledged £2.5 billion to secure leadership in AI and Quantum technology.…

[5018,3,4
1942,748,393,1699,4884,47527,1144,72595,712,16,15,1764
post-860554","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-britain","category-uk","category-united-kingdom","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-britain","tag-england","tag-european-union","tag-great-britain","tag-international-development","tag-northern-ireland","tag-research-and-science-funding","tag-scotland","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-wales
["GET
