{"id":862251,"date":"2026-03-31T09:14:29","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/862251\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T09:14:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:14:29","slug":"woonpioniers-builds-a-house-that-moves-with-the-dunes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/862251\/","title":{"rendered":"Woonpioniers builds a house that &#8220;moves with the dunes&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dutch architectural studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/woonpioniers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Woonpioniers<\/a> has built a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">house<\/a> on the dunes in the south of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/netherlands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Netherlands<\/a> using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/modular\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">modular methods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located on Goeree-Overflakkee island, Duinhuis \u2013 or Dune House \u2013 was constructed using portable methods in efforts to adhere to strict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/building-regulations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">building regulations<\/a> on the Ouddorp dunes.<\/p>\n<p>A large section of the dune area is part of the &#8220;Natura 2000&#8221; nature reserve, which means that the construction had to consider the rules around nitrogen emissions, accessibility, as well as building during bird nesting seasons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310108 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x.jpeg\" alt=\"Dune house on Goeree-Overflakkee island.\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Duinhuis sits on the Ouddorp dunes<\/p>\n<p>To work within these constraints, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woonpioniers.nl\/?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Woonpioniers<\/a> founder Daniel Venneman and his team built the three separate units of Duinhuis off-site. The bathrooms, wardrobes and built-in beds were also constructed in the factory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We manufactured the house in a factory with significantly limited on-site work and environmental disturbance,&#8221; Venneman told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cool extra advantage of this working strategy was that the clients and their children could also participate in the assembly in the workshop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310109 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x5.jpeg\" alt=\"Wooden structure on beach\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The house was made up of three modular units<\/p>\n<p>After each component was fabricated and transported to the site, the three units \u2013 complete with their interiors \u2013 were put up in the span of a day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was like putting together a puzzle,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>For support, the structure rests on top of minimally invasive steel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stilts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stilts<\/a>. The stilts were carefully vibrated into the ground to avoid shocks to the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310146 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x5.jpeg\" alt=\"Wood panelled rooms with scenic views.\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1574\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The interiors are panelled in wood<\/p>\n<p>From the frame to the floors, the building consists almost entirely of wood.<\/p>\n<p>Thermally modified wood was used for the window frames, facades and roofs, and from the exposure to the dune&#8217;s salty and windy conditions will turn a silvery grey over time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310148 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1.jpeg\" alt=\"A wooden office with windows.\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Each room overlooks unique views<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/solar-power\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solar panels<\/a> were recessed and the gutters concealed in the exterior roof layer. A sheet of steel separates the roofs&#8217; interior and exterior, making it watertight.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We work as bio-based as possible,&#8221; Venneman explained. &#8220;By primarily using sustainable materials, our negative ecological footprint was kept minimal, and supported the &#8216;barefoot&#8217; lifestyle that feels at one with nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/03\/26\/light-house-woonpioniers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/light-house-woonpioniers-netherlands-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Light House by Woonpioniers\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Woonpioniers opts for &#8220;modernity tucked inside tradition&#8221; at timber-lined Dutch home\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As well as building regulations, the dune location meant that wind conditions had to be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Factoring in the dominant wind direction and the possibility of other air streams, each section of the house was designed to be used as a shelter yet remain in the sun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s why the design feels like it has no back, but three front sides,&#8221; said Venneman.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310145 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x5.jpeg\" alt=\"A large space with wooden panelling.\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1578\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The three units are connected by a kitchen area<\/p>\n<p>The precise placement of each unit also resulted in a &#8220;kaleidoscope&#8221; effect, letting sunlight and sound oscillate through the space during the day. What resulted is a &#8220;sense of protected connection with the surroundings&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The units were staggered in height, allowing the building to follow the dune&#8217;s natural topography. And, with each module sporting a slim glass facade, the rooms have unique views.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310149 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x5.jpeg\" alt=\"A living area with large glass doors.\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The living area faces south and enjoys sunsets in the evenings<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the three units sitting at varying heights, the house moves with the dune and nestles itself subtly into the existing environment,&#8221; said Venneman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was important for us to be aware of the fluidity of the dune landscape,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;This kind of terrain demands respect, and that&#8217;s the reason why we didn&#8217;t reshape the dune composition at all before building.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310151 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x.jpeg\" alt=\"A brightly lit room on the dunes.\" width=\"1578\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Light filters through the house like a &#8220;kaleidoscope&#8221; throughout the day<\/p>\n<p>Two of the three modules contain bedrooms, while the third unit holds the living space and a terrace.<\/p>\n<p>The main bedroom sits over the dune ridge and is exposed to optimal morning light, while the living room and terrace receive evening sun.<\/p>\n<p>The guest quarters rest on the north side and consist of two built-in box-beds. This section of the home also features a study and a bathroom that opens externally as well, useful for those returning from the beach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310112 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x.jpeg\" alt=\"A warmly lit wooden structure on the beach.\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Large opening on each unit allows for cross-ventilation<\/p>\n<p>Centred between the three sections, is a pentagon-shaped kitchen, which also opens up to the dunes on three of its sides.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen functions as the house&#8217;s &#8220;floating link&#8221;, with three full-height glass screens that include the primary entrance and sliding doors to a patio and the dunes. Low stairs lead to the other areas of the house.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The central glass link is designed to blur the boundary between inside and out,&#8221; Vennemann said. &#8220;When the sliding doors are open, the sounds of the rustling poplar trees and the wind are amplified, and a sea breeze flows directly through the centre of the home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310110 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/duinhuis-dune-house-woonpioniers-goeree-overflakkee-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x.jpeg\" alt=\"A glass and wood house on top of a sandy beach.\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The dune house is built with bio-based methods and materials<\/p>\n<p>Connecting the kitchen and each unit are concealed doors that allow each section to become a private &#8220;small house&#8221; when needed.
