{"id":862769,"date":"2026-03-31T14:49:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T14:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/862769\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T14:49:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T14:49:18","slug":"war-and-oil-shock-push-europes-inflation-higher-reigniting-rate-debate-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/862769\/","title":{"rendered":"War and oil shock push Europe\u2019s inflation higher, reigniting rate debate \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eurozone inflation climbed to 2.5 percent in March, up from 1.9 percent in February, as energy costs surged in the wake of Israeli-US strikes on Iran, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/data.ecb.europa.eu\/data\/datasets\/HICP\/data-information?dataset%5B0%5D=Indices%20of%20Consumer%20Prices%20%28HICP%29&amp;advFilterDataset%5B0%5D=Indices%20of%20Consumer%20Prices%20%28HICP%29&amp;layerType=AL&amp;showDatasetModal=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flash estimate<\/a> published Tuesday (31 March) by the EU statistics bureau Eurostat.<\/p>\n<p>It is the steepest monthly rise since 2022, when Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing gas disruption sent benchmark prices spiralling across Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This time fossil fuels were again almost entirely responsible for the uptick of inflation. Energy prices are now 4.9 percent higher than a year ago \u2014\u00a0 up from 3.1 percent annually just a month ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Inflation in other sectors remained broadly stable.
