He emphasized the public must address the trend before it becomes the latest example of delayed recognition patterns previously seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2024\/02\/09\/teen-opioid-overdose-spikes-treatment-expensive\/72173493007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2024\/02\/09\/teen-opioid-overdose-spikes-treatment-expensive\/72173493007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opioid abuse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2024\/09\/05\/teen-vaping-rates-more-turning-to-this-product\/75085483007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2024\/09\/05\/teen-vaping-rates-more-turning-to-this-product\/75085483007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youth vaping<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am very concerned. I want the public to be especially aware of this dangerous product and the serious and continuing risk it poses to America\u2019s youth,&#8221; Makary said.\u00a0&#8220;While the FDA is closely following the distribution and sale of these products, it is critical that you appreciate the magnitude of the underlying danger of these products, and disseminate information about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about tianeptine.<\/p>\n<p>Is tianeptine banned in the U.S.?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/01\/20\/congress-fda-supplement-tianeptine-addictive\/72294254007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tianeptine has been banned<\/a>\u00a0in 10 U.S. states:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alabama<\/li>\n<li>Florida<\/li>\n<li>Georgia<\/li>\n<li>Indiana<\/li>\n<li>Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>Michigan<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi<\/li>\n<li>Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Tennessee<\/li>\n<li>North Carolina<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What products is tianeptine sold as?<\/p>\n<p>Makary said tianeptine is sold under various product names, including Tianaa, Zaza, Neptune\u2019s Fix, Pegasus and TD Red.<\/p>\n<p>Is tianeptine legal in other countries?<\/p>\n<p>Tianeptine is licensed in some countries and marketed as an atypical antidepressant meant to treat depression through three daily 12.5 mg oral doses, according to Makary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Higher doses can produce euphoria, and some countries have restricted how tianeptine is prescribed and dispensed or revised the drug label to warn of possible addiction,&#8221; Makary said. &#8220;FDA recommends that health care professionals encourage patients to avoid all products containing tianeptine, including those claiming to treat an ailment or disorder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What is tianeptine?<\/p>\n<p>Tianeptine is prescribed as an antidepressant in some European, Asian and Latin American countries, but it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/information-select-dietary-supplement-ingredients-and-other-substances\/tianeptine-dietary-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not approved for any medical use in the U.S<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, companies are marketing and selling tianeptine products as dietary supplements typically in pill and powder form, claiming it can improve brain function and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/tianeptine-products-linked-serious-harm-overdoses-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> treat depression, anxiety, pain<\/a> and even opioid use disorder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The drug is typically available at gas stations, convenience stores, vape shops and online retailers, according to the FDA.<\/p>\n<p>While many use tianeptine to treat their ailments and assume they are safe because of their availability. However, the FDA said tianeptine is a prime example of availability not indicating effectiveness or safety.<\/p>\n<p>Can people get addicted to tianeptine?<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/gas-station-heroin-tianeptine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, tianeptine is addictive.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2024\/04\/01\/gas-station-heroin-addiction-shame-stigma\/73144835007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2024\/04\/01\/gas-station-heroin-addiction-shame-stigma\/73144835007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2024 interview with USA TODAY<\/a>, Alabama woman Chrissy Reifschneider said she tried tianeptine pills after a family member who worked at a gas station recommended them to her. Within days, she said she became addicted to the drug, and experienced three gruesome years.<\/p>\n<p>Reifschneider said she took about five pills every four hours in which she experienced hair loss, weight loss, auditory hallucinations; developed paranoia surrounding electronics and suicidal ideations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought well, I&#8217;m not sticking a needle in my arm, so I literally convinced myself that I wasn\u2019t a drug addict until I realized I didn&#8217;t recognize who I was anymore,&#8221; Reifschneider, who is now sober, told USA TODAY last year. &#8220;It&#8217;s crazy to think that these gas station pills just controlled me.
