{"id":86568,"date":"2025-05-09T05:42:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T05:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/86568\/"},"modified":"2025-05-09T05:42:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T05:42:08","slug":"mclaren-announce-popular-f1-driver-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/86568\/","title":{"rendered":"McLaren announce popular F1 driver switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpfans.com\/en\/f1-teams\/mclaren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McLaren<\/a> have announced that one of motorsport&#8217;s most exciting talents will line up for the team at a Formula 1 grand prix later this year.&#13;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\nIndyCar star Pato O&#8217;Ward will drive in FP1 in front of a raucous home crowd at the <b><a title=\"Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpfans.com\/en\/f1-race-calendar\/gran-premio-de-la-ciudad-de-mexico-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City<\/a><\/b> on October 24.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\nIt is the second time that the Monterray-born racer will take to the famous track after <b><a title=\"replacing Lando Norris\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpfans.com\/us\/f1-news\/1033241\/mclaren-f1-driver-replacement-mexico-grand-prix-lando-norris-pato-oward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replacing Lando Norris<\/a><\/b> for the weekend&#8217;s opening session in 2024.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\nIn a statement, O&#8217;Ward said: \u201cI\u2019m excited to be jumping back in the car for FP1 at my home race in Mexico this year. &#13;<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;The Mexico City fans were unbelievable last time out, and it was a great feeling being able to extract everything from the programme that the team had planned.&#8221;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Ward set to thrill Mexican fans<\/p>\n<p>\nMcLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella added: \u201cPato provided an appreciated contribution last season and continues to impress in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, making him a suitable driver for the Free Practice 1 session. &#13;<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;This will provide further knowledge for Pato as he continues to be available as part of our reserve driver pool for the second year, ensuring we have a wide pool of drivers available to be called upon if required.\u201d&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\nThe 26-year-old will also provide support and feedback over the race weekend to assist with the car&#8217;s setup for both Norris and Oscar Piastri, who will hope to still be in contention for the world championship at that stage as the season nears its conclusion.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\nPiastri leads his team-mate by 16 points in the standings following last weekend&#8217;s <b><a title=\"victory at the Miami GP\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpfans.com\/en\/f1-news\/1048951\/f1-miami-grand-prix-2025-results-final-classification-with-penalties-applied\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">victory at the Miami GP<\/a><\/b>, with defending champion Max Verstappen occupying third spot.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd their respective performances so far have seen McLaren open up a commanding gap at the top of the constructors&#8217;
