Princess Diana<\/strong> denied having anything to do with author Andrew Morton<\/strong>\u2018s explosive 1992 tell-all about her failing marriage to King Charles III<\/strong> and misery as a member of Britain\u2019s royal family.<\/p>\n

But one senior royal wasn\u2019t buying it.<\/p>\n

According to excerpts from Hugo Vickers<\/strong>\u2018 upcoming biography, Queen Elizabeth II, which was recently serialized in Daily Mail<\/a>, Queen Elizabeth II<\/strong>\u2018s husband, Prince Philip<\/strong>, came to his own conclusion about Diana\u2019s involvement in the bestseller initially published under the title Diana: Her True Story.<\/p>\n

As Vickers writes, \u201cIt seems almost incredible that so many people accepted Diana\u2019s denial of any involvement in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne person who wasn\u2019t fooled, though, was Prince Philip, who read the book on flights to and from Canada in July [1992] and clearly detected her hand in it. Feeling that too much had been revealed, he was not impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fallout\"In<\/p>\n

In a new royal biography, Hugo Vickers writes that in cooperating with author Andrew Morton, Princess Diana \u2018laid every grievance she could muster against her hapless husband,\u2019 King Charles III, and confirmed that the former Camilla Parker Bowles was \u2018the other woman in his life.\u2019 By: Phil Loftus\/Capital Pictures \/ MEGA<\/p>\n

The book delivered a \u201chammer blow\u201d to the then-Prince and Princess of Wales\u2019 already fragile marriage, Vickers explains.<\/p>\n

It detailed Diana\u2019s deeply personal struggles \u2014 including the breakdown of her relationship with the future king and his intimate relationship with Queen Camilla<\/strong>, who at the time was still his married mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles \u2014 which intensified scrutiny of the royal family.<\/p>\n

Behind palace doors, tensions were high.<\/p>\n

Vickers recounts a \u201csticky meeting at Windsor\u201d where Diana and Charles sat down with the queen and Duke of Edinburgh to address the growing crisis.<\/p>\n

During the discussion, Diana maintained that Charles had never wanted to marry her and that the situation with Camilla had become \u201cintolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the monarch \u201cmaintained her neutrality,\u201d Vickers writes, Philip took a more active role.<\/p>\n

Trust erodes\"Author<\/p>\n

Author Andrew Morton wrote the international bestseller \u2018Diana: Her True Story: In Her Own Words,\u2019 which exposed Princess Diana\u2019s isolation, bulimia and the collapse of her marriage, altering public perception of the British monarchy. By: MEGA<\/p>\n

In the months that followed, Philip attempted to intervene privately, writing a series of letters to Diana between June and October 1992 in hopes of helping salvage the marriage.<\/p>\n

According to Vickers, who has read their correspondence \u2014 Philip penned six letters, Diana wrote five \u2014 the exchanges revealed how invested the Duke of Edinburgh was, with Diana acknowledging that it was clear he \u201creally cared.\u201d<\/p>\n

But his efforts were complicated by growing mistrust.<\/p>\n

Vickers writes that Philip became uneasy after recognizing \u201cone or two phrases from his correspondence with Diana popping up in the press.\u201d<\/p>\n

It raised alarm bells. \u201cThis made him worry that every time there was a private discussion between Charles and Diana, details would appear in the Daily Mail,\u201d Vickers writes.<\/p>\n

Tragedy and vindication<\/p>\n

Charles and Diana publicly announced their separation at the end of 1992. Their divorce was finalized in 1996.<\/p>\n

Although Diana had denied working with Morton, the full extent of her involvement eventually became public.<\/p>\n

As noted in Vickers\u2019 book, the truth emerged shortly after she tragically died in 1997.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin a month of Diana\u2019s death, Andrew Morton exposed to the world the full extent of her cooperation with his book,\u201d Vickers writes. \u201cPrince Philip had been right all along.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morton republished the bestseller with a new title \u2014 Diana: Her True Story: In Her Own Words \u2014 in October 1997, just weeks after the 36-year-old princess was killed in Paris.<\/p>\n
