We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 jZvTVV\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The number of haulage companies going insolvent has almost doubled in the five years since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/europe-ed-vaizey-brexit-dell-lockheed-martin-b2951356.html\" title=\"UK must be more business friendly and not talk itself down, says ex-FT editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a>, sparking fears over supply chain disruption and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/food-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food prices<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The data, revealed in response to a Parliamentary question submitted by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/politics-explained\/liberal-democrats-ed-davey-local-elections-b2945475.html\" title=\"Do the Liberal Democrats still have a role in national politics?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Lib Dem<\/a> Europe spokesperson Al Pinkerton, shows that 2,051 haulage companies went bust between 2021-2025 &#8211; almost double the 1,068 that went bust in the five years prior. <\/p>\n<p>It comes amid growing fears over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/money\/fuel-prices-bank-of-england-iran-israel-birmingham-city-university-b2950986.html\" title=\"Why are energy, petrol and mortgage prices so high right now?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiralling prices and shortages as a result of the Iran war, <\/a>with oil prices having soared in response to Iran\u2019s stranglehold on tankers passing through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-war-live-trump-israel-oil-kharg-island-b2948081.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strait of Hormuz.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figures are expected to only get worse in the coming months, as haulage firms scramble to adapt to the full enforcement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>\u2019s Entry-Exit System, with the Road Haulage Association warning that 80 per cent of operators expect a decrease in business.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/14f453fa21db48e7c0a8ae24c68688a0Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzUxMTE4NTQ3-2.78443545.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"2,051 haulage companies went bust between 2021-2025, government data shows\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>2,051 haulage companies went bust between 2021-2025, government data shows (PA Archive)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, industry bodies have previously warned that the hit to the economy arising as a result of the new EES system &#8211; which requires UK travellers to have their fingerprints registered and photograph taken to enter the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/minimum-age-railcard-car-rental-cruise-flights-b2318330.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Schengen area<\/a> &#8211; could be as high as \u00a3400 million. <\/p>\n<p>The Liberal Democrats are now reiterating calls for the government to urgently secure an agreement from the EU to allow British HGV drivers to register biometric details away from the border. <\/p>\n<p>Liberal Democrat Europe Spokesperson, Al Pinkerton MP told The Independent: \u201cThe government must immediately secure an agreement with the EU to allow British hauliers to register biometric details away from the border. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure to do so will have a catastrophic impact, not only for haulage companies who are unable to survive, but also for supply chains and a subsequent increase in food and goods prices for those already facing the effects of the soaring cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinisters must therefore also begin negotiations with our European partners on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/customs-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Customs Union<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A Customs Union is the single biggest lever the government can pull to boost business, deliver growth, and slash unnecessary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brexit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> bureaucracy.
