Former football Joey Barton is due to appear in court<\/a> today. Barton, 43, of Fox Bank Close, Widnes, Cheshire, has been in custody<\/a> since March 10 when he was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent.<\/p>\n

Barton is set to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, April 7. He is accused of assaulting former football manager Kevin Lynch near Huyton<\/a> and Prescot<\/a> Golf Club on Sunday, March 8, alongside co-defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, of Huyton.<\/p>\n

On March 20, Judge David Potter refused a bail application for Barton <\/a>at Liverpool Crown Court<\/a>. The majority of the bail hearing was held in private, before the judge announced his ruling in open court.<\/p>\n

Barton did not attend the hearing but was represented by Simon Csoka KC. Following the pair’s first appearance in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on March 10, O’Grady was released on conditional bail.<\/p>\n

Former Manchester City and QPR midfielder Barton has one England cap and also played for Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille.<\/p>\n

The victim of the alleged attack, Mr Lynch, is known across Merseyside for his stints as manager of Marine, City of Liverpool FC and most recently Prescot Cables.<\/p>\n

He is understood to be a member of the golf club, with him also the founder and headteacher of NexGen Academy in Dovecot, a school for children with additional needs.<\/p>\n

The particulars of the charge are that Barton and O’Grady “unlawfully and maliciously wounded Kevin Lynch with intent to do him grievous bodily harm”.<\/p>\n
