Photo: Uncredited/NASA/dpa – ATTENTION: For editorial use only in connection with current reporting and only with full attribution of the above credit

        Keystone

The crew of “Artemis 2” flew closer to the moon than at any other time during their mission.

The four astronauts in the “Orion” capsule came within 6,545 kilometers of the Earth’s satellite, according to the US space agency NASA. A landing was not planned for this mission.

The crew – consisting of the Americans Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman and the Canadian Jeremy Hansen – had previously set a record: They traveled further from Earth than any humans had ever traveled before. At 19:57 CEST on Monday, the four astronauts broke the record of around 400,171 kilometers set in 1970 by the “Apollo 13” mission. At the furthest point, they were around 406,771 kilometers from Earth.

Seeing things that no human has ever seen before

During their flight around the moon, the astronauts observed the celestial body very intensively for around seven hours. On the far side of the moon in particular, they were able to see things that no human had ever seen with their own eyes before, partly due to the solar conditions. As expected, it was not possible for the astronauts to communicate with the control center on Earth for around 40 minutes.

Towards the end of the flyby of the moon, the astronauts were even able to observe a solar eclipse, during which the sun disappeared behind the moon from the perspective of “Orion”.

The four astronauts are the first humans to be close to the moon for more than 50 years. They lifted off from the Cape Canaveral spaceport in Florida on Thursday night (CEST) aboard the Orion capsule with the Space Launch System rocket and are due to land back on Earth after a total of around ten days in the Pacific.

HANDOUT – This image from a video provided by NASA shows the Artemis II crew (l-r), Jeremy Hansen,…

[5311
49,978,659
0":"post-877214","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-united-states","8":"tag-united-states","9":"tag-us","10":"tag-usa
["GET
