Watching on as Ryan Gravenberch became a Premier League winner in his second year as a Liverpool player, there is said to be a feeling of ‘internal regret’ over at the club who sold him to the Reds, Bayern Munich. Arne Slot has helped expose that they in fact had the answer to an ongoing problem all along.<\/p>\n
The fourth midfielder to arrive on Merseyside in summer 2023, Gravenberch’s deadline day transfer<\/a> served a purpose for all involved. Liverpool<\/a> would finish the entire rebuild of their engine room, the Dutchman had the promise of more on-field opportunities and his former employers got the funds they so desperately needed to go and sign a better-suited defensive midfielder in Joao Palhinha.<\/p>\n Except the way it has worked out is this. The club knew what he was capable of, but he needed playing time (which he\u2019s been given at Liverpool) that he was never going to get at Bayern Munich,” Christian Falk has explained to CF Bayern Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n “Thomas Tuchel saw Gravenberch playing further up the pitch, perhaps as a No.10 or an offensive No.8. But this season has proven that the Dutchman is more than capable of playing a more defensively-minded midfield role.<\/p>\n “If Tuchel had seen this, Bayern wouldn\u2019t have spent \u20ac51m [\u00a343.2m] on Jo\u00e3o Palhina. That still hurts a lot.<\/p>\n “Credit to Marco Neppe and Hasan Salihamidzic, who brought him in, but you still need a coach who trusts and counts on the player. Ultimately, if a player can perform like this at Liverpool, then it\u2019s clear \u2013 a mistake was made.”<\/p>\n CF Bayern Insider<\/a>, in their own words, describe the choice to sell the midfielder for \u20ac40m [\u00a334.2m] as ‘haunting’, and consider adding Palhinha’s own fee to create a disastrous total of \u20ac91m (\u00a377.4m).<\/p>\n An extra dimension to the whole irony of the situation is that Palhinha had been linked with a move from Fulham to Anfield<\/a> for the best part of the same summer too.<\/p>\n In this Premier League-winning campaign, Gravenberch had started all 34 matches before the title was won. He was allowed a well-earned rest for the trip to Chelsea last Sunday.<\/p>\n His 57 interceptions – the second-most of any player in the English top-flight – have been crucial to Liverpool’s relentless hammering of opposition, enhanced by an 88.9 per cent pass accuracy to kickstart attacks at tempo.<\/p>\n
