Russian<\/a> president Vladimir Putin<\/a> has declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine<\/a> over the Orthodox Easter<\/a> weekend.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s decree, released by the Kremlin, orders Russian forces to observe a ceasefire starting at 4pm on Saturday and lasting until the end of Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn connection with the approaching holiday of Orthodox Easter, a ceasefire is declared \u200bfrom 1600 on 11th April to the end of the \u2060day of 12th April,\u201d the Kremlin announcement \u200csaid. \u201cWe \u200cproceed \u200bon the basis that the Ukrainian side will follow the example \u2060of the Russian \u200bFederation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announcement said defence \u200bminister Andri Belousov had issued an order to \u200cRussia\u2019s top commander, chief \u200bof the general staff Valery Gerasimov, \u201cto stop for \u2060this period military \u2060action in \u200ball directions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s move follows Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a>\u2019s proposal earlier this week to observe a pause in attacks on each other\u2019s energy infrastructure over the Orthodox Easter.<\/p>\n

He said he made the offer through the United States<\/a>, which has been mediating talks between delegations from Moscow and Kyiv as Russia\u2019s invasion stretches into a fifth year.<\/p>\n

Previous attempts to secure ceasefires have had little or no impact.<\/p>\n

Zelenskiy said early on \u200cFriday that Ukraine would act \u200bin accordance with an Easter ceasefire.<\/p>\n

\u201cUkraine has repeatedly \u200bstated that we are \u2060ready for reciprocal steps. We \u200cproposed \u200ca \u200bceasefire during the Easter holiday \u2060this \u200byear and \u200bwill act accordingly,\u201d \u200cZelenskiy said on Telegram.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople need an Easter without threats and a real move towards \u200cpeace, and \u2060Russia has a chance not to \u200creturn to attacks even after \u200bEaster.\u201d <\/p>\n

Putin unilaterally declared a 30-hour ceasefire last Easter, but each side accused the other of breaking it.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin statement announcing the ceasefire said that \u201corders have been issued for this period to cease hostilities in all directions\u201d, adding that \u201ctroops are to be prepared to counter any possible provocations by the enemy, as well as any aggressive actions\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe assume that the Ukrainian side will follow the example of the Russian Federation,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Russia has effectively rejected a 30-day unconditional truce proposed last year by the US and Ukraine as a step towards peace, insisting instead on a comprehensive settlement, but Moscow has announced several short, unilateral ceasefires.<\/p>\n
