Biometric data, including facial scans and fingerprints, now replace old passport stamps for all non-EU visitors. Modernisation efforts and improved tracking of stays have been behind the change to better security and efficiency across Europe.

Mixed reactions emerge from real passengers across European airports

British and European travellers have been posting immediate feedback after encountering the system during its phased rollout and full launch. Experiences vary strongly by airport size, staffing management and whether travellers are registering their biometric details for the first time.

Frustrations mount at busy airports

UK sports presenter Jacqui Oatley reported shocking queues at Frankfurt for Brits heading home. “Frankfurt queues for us Brits to come home recently were shocking. In comments, Sevilla, Barcelona, Copenhagen and Lanzarote all came out as positive experiences.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), another new border control system, is thought will begin operations in the last quarter of 2026 (October – December 2026). The European Union has confirmed this timeline on its official website and states that no action is required from passengers at this time. The exact launch date will be announced several months in advance, following the Entry/Exit System (EES) rollout. Once live, visa-exempt travellers from approximately 60 countries will need to apply online for ETIAS authorisation before short stays in the 30 participating European countries. But, let’s put that to the back of our minds for now until the dust settles from EES.

How about you? Have you had to go through the new EES controls yet?
