{"id":88548,"date":"2025-05-09T22:57:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T22:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/88548\/"},"modified":"2025-05-09T22:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T22:57:10","slug":"asda-pleads-guilty-to-selling-food-past-use-by-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/88548\/","title":{"rendered":"Asda pleads guilty to selling food past use-by date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health and Safety inspectors found a number of unsafe food items on display in February, 14 2024 and March, 20 last year<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_WhatsApp-Image-2025-02-28-at-175915.jpg\" alt=\"Asda in Huyton\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Asda in Huyton(Image: Liverpool ECHO)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A supermarket has admitted to breaching the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 by displaying food on its shelves past its use-by date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/asda\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Asda<\/a> Stores Ltd appeared before Liverpool and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/knowsley\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Knowsley<\/a> Magistrates\u2019 Court yesterday, May 8, and pleaded guilty to six charges of breaching the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The case follows an inspection of the Asda Superstore on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/huyton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Huyton<\/a> Lane, Huyton on February, 14 2024 and March, 20 2024. During these inspections, officers from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/knowsley-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Knowsley Council<\/a>\u2019s Environmental Health Team found a number of items of food on sale after the use by date had expired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to Knowsley Council, use by dates are applied to highly perishable foods that could become unsafe to eat if kept for too long. Harmful bacteria can grow to dangerous levels in food without the food spoiling or looking off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">These bacteria have the potential to cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable and elderly people. The use by date is the date until which the manufacturer can guarantee that the food is safe to eat.
