{"id":886743,"date":"2026-04-11T11:36:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T11:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/886743\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T11:36:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T11:36:21","slug":"why-win-is-essential-for-wales-in-six-nations-against-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/886743\/","title":{"rendered":"Why win is essential for Wales in Six Nations against Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"Sean Lynn in Wales training \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1242\" height=\"699\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1700b2c3b7ff035faee849f17c8f0bf7.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wales have slumped to 12th in the world rankings<\/p>\n<p>They say what goes up must come down, and that has certainly been the case with the Wales women&#8217;s rugby team in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>After turning professional in 2022, Wales enjoyed successive third-place finishes in the Six Nations, soaring in 2023 to their highest world ranking of sixth.<\/p>\n<p>They became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cy0lj9ryx09o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one of the best-paid professional women&#039;s teams;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">one of the best-paid professional women&#8217;s teams<\/a> as the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) made up for years of under-investment, but results worryingly dried up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cyv4elq6nn9o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sean Lynn&#039;s appointment as head coach;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Sean Lynn&#8217;s appointment as head coach<\/a> last year sparked fresh optimism, but even a three-time Premiership Women&#8217;s Rugby (PWR) title holder has so far been unable to transform a Wooden Spoon side into a winning team.<\/p>\n<p>During his first 12 months, Wales lost all five Six Nations games and all three World Cup pool games &#8211; their only victory in 2025 coming on the summer tour of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>But now that Lynn has had the luxury of time, pressure is on him and the players to deliver, starting with Saturday&#8217;s Six Nations opener against Scotland at Principality Stadium (16:40 BST).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"content-list\">\n<li\/>\n<li\/><\/ul>\n<p>Reputations on the line<\/p>\n<p>Lynn inherited much of Ioan Cunningham&#8217;s old regime, but this is the first campaign where he has truly been able to put his own stamp on the squad and staff.<\/p>\n<p>After what must have been a brutal post-World Cup inquest, Shaun Connor (attack coach) and Mike Hill (forwards coach) made way for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cly20xmrvz3o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ashley Beck and Steve Salvin.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Ashley Beck and Steve Salvin. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/c9dn6x04vg4o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tyrone Holmes left Scotland&#039;s set-up;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Tyrone Holmes left Scotland&#8217;s set-up<\/a> to become Wales&#8217; first full-time defence coach, while the playing group has been freshened up with nine potential debutants.<\/p>\n<p>And as far as we know there are no off-field issues disrupting preparations, so reputations are about to be put on the line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a high performance sport,&#8221; said Lynn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I learned a lot about myself [last year]. I learned a lot about the group and I learned a lot about the programme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those small changes that I&#8217;ve made within the programme itself, the Celtic Challenge, what we&#8217;re looking at coming into camp, I&#8217;m hoping we will start to see the big difference in that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tandy shows the way<\/p>\n<p>Should Lynn need any inspiration, he need not look far across the office.<\/p>\n<p>Wales men&#8217;s head coach Steve Tandy helped his side end a three-year Six Nations losing streak with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cwyg4xzpy41o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D#:~:text=Six%20Nations%202026%3A%20Wales%2031,Nations%20losing%20streak%20%2D%20BBC%20Sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:final-round victory over Italy last month,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">final-round victory over Italy last month,<\/a> while performances in defeat offered plenty of encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped the women can turn a similar corner in their campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve worked really closely with Steve Tandy, I&#8217;ve been into his camp, it&#8217;s an open environment,&#8221; said Lynn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re about, supporting each other as a nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wales captain Kate Williams said: &#8220;We can be inspired by them [Wales men], but we&#8217;re not limited to what they&#8217;re doing as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re looking internally about what we can do and finding confidence in ourselves to then be able to put out our own performance and write our own story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Inspiration has also been drawn from other Welsh sporting stars, including boxer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/boxing\/articles\/ckg9eyykkeyo?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lauren Price who retained her world titles in Cardiff;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Lauren Price who retained her world titles in Cardiff<\/a> last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Something like Saturday night inspired me massively,&#8221; Lynn said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are one Wales and we are such a proud nation, that for me was who we are and what we&#8217;re about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Wales captain Kate Williams charges at Scotland's Elis Martin\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"543\" height=\"306\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ec73048cf7da2cc13b7d3ef53405ee3f.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Former New Zealand Navy officer Kate Williams will captain Wales in the 2026 Women&#8217;s Six Nations<\/p>\n<p>No grudges and starting strong<\/p>\n<p>Wales could be forgiven for holding a grudge after the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/videos\/ce93p7vjp71o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bsport%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scotland bullied them off the park;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Scotland bullied them off the park<\/a> in their World Cup opener last summer, a defeat which crushed Wales&#8217; knockout hopes.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Wales have not tasted victory over the Scots in over three years, having previously held the upper hand.<\/p>\n<p>But Williams said they have tried not to dwell as they enter a new World Cup cycle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do have fire in the belly there, but also it&#8217;s a bit of a fresh start for us as well, and we&#8217;re looking forward,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not looking to carry all of that through to the Six Nations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we step out there, it&#8217;s not just fuelled by emotion, it&#8217;s fuelled by belief in ourselves and our abilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"content-list\">\n<li\/>\n<li\/><\/ul>\n<p>With powerhouses France and England waiting in rounds two and three, Wales know all too well the importance of hitting the ground running against Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always important to try to get the first win as quickly as possible, but I think we&#8217;re also looking for a performance,&#8221; said Williams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re looking for something to build on as we go through the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t be looking at France and England before we look at Scotland first, it&#8217;s step by step.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps there is no better time for Wales to play their Celtic rivals.<\/p>\n<p>Scotland arrive in Cardiff with a bit of the unknown.
