The EES is an advanced computer system that digitally records the entries and exits of third-country nationals traveling to 29 European countries for short stays.<\/b>\u00a0The SES collects biographical and biometric data, as well as other travel information, replacing the previous passport stamping system. It provides reliable data on border crossings, systematically detecting individuals who have exceeded their authorized stay, as well as cases of document and identity fraud.<\/p>\n

The system began to be rolled out gradually in October 2025.<\/b>\u00a0Since then, more than 52 million entries and exits have been recorded, with over 27,000 refusals of entry, of which more than 700 individuals were identified as a threat to the security of the European Union.<\/p>\n

With the SES operating at full capacity, registering a traveler takes, on average, just 70 seconds\u2014a fraction of the time it took for third-country nationals under previous procedures. As of this Friday, April 10, the system has been fully implemented at all EU external border crossings.<\/p>\n

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy,<\/b>\u00a0describes the SES as \u201ca major step forward in strengthening the security of the EU and its citizens. It equips our borders with modern, interoperable, and highly advanced technological systems, reflecting Europe\u2019s commitment to ensuring robust protection of our external borders and overall security. It will enable authorities to detect risks in real time, manage overstays more effectively, and strengthen trust in the Schengen Area.\u201d<\/p>\n

First digital initiative for North Africa<\/b><\/p>\n

Coinciding with this, the European Commission has also launched a digital transformation program covering North Africa and the countries of the Middle East<\/b>. This is the first digital initiative under the Mediterranean Pact, launched in late 2025.<\/p>\n

The program, co-financed by the German government, promotes inclusive and sustainable growth by improving digital services for citizens, public administrations, and businesses; harmonizing legal regulations; strengthening cybersecurity; and enhancing digital capabilities.<\/p>\n

The ultimate goal is to help governments in the Southern Mediterranean improve digital regulations, strengthen legal frameworks, and enhance digital services, particularly for local SMEs.<\/b><\/p>\n

The program focuses on three key components to drive digital transformation in the region: aligning digital telecommunications regulations with those of the EU; strengthening cybersecurity by improving national frameworks and governance and boosting the capacity to prevent, respond to, and manage cyber threats; and developing regional digital skills in line with the European Digital Competence Framework.<\/p>\n
