The Times highlights the word &#8220;historic&#8221;, used by both Sir Keir Starmer and President Trump to describe the agreement. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The I<\/b>, external<\/a><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> says the UK has won the global race to &#8220;shake off&#8221; the worst Trump trade tariffs. But the Financial Times reports that the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e9d311f3-ce7d-4f72-8a46-a84b1181ff33\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">&#8220;scope of the deal is limited&#8221;<\/b>, external<\/a><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> and still leaves Britain in a worse position than before the US President began his trade war. Both the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14693585\/Trump-Brexit-making-UK-trade-deal-possible.html\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Daily Mail<\/b>, external<\/a><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/34865915\/uk-pips-eu-trade-deal-usa-trump-brexit-tariffs\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">the Sun<\/b>, external<\/a><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> note that Trump said the deal was only possible because of Brexit.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Daily Telegraph claims the pact includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2025\/05\/08\/starmer-hands-trump-veto-on-chinese-investment-in-uk\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clause allowing the US to object to Chinese firms, external<\/a> investing in Britain.\u00a0 The Conservatives tell the paper this amounts to Trump being handed a &#8220;veto&#8221; but a government spokesperson has dismissed the claim as &#8220;nonsense&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Photographs of the new Pope addressing the crowds at St Peter&#8217;s Square feature on most of the front pages. The Times says Robert Prevost appeared to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/europe\/article\/american-robert-prevost-elected-catholic-church-nklhxrv0j\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holding back tears, external<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/may\/08\/robert-francis-prevost-the-moderate-good-humoured-first-american-pope\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian, external<\/a> says he used his first message to promise to &#8220;build bridges&#8221;.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/08\/new-pope-elected-papal-conclave-white-smoke-seen-second-day-23051139\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Metro, external<\/a> focuses on the speed at which the new pope was selected, around 25 hours after the conclave began. The paper&#8217;s headline is:\u00a0&#8220;Holy Smoke&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Financial Times reports that the investment firm BlackRock is ending flexible working for senior staff. Two people familiar with the plans have told the paper the company is ordering roughly 1,000 managing directors globally to return to the office five days a week. BlackRock has declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And most of the papers reflect on the end of four days of events and celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Last night the King told crowds at a concert in central London that the sacrifice of the wartime generation should never be forgotten. The Telegraph calls his message a &#8220;salute to our VE Day heroes&#8221;. The Sun says it was a &#8220;stirring tribute&#8221;.
