{"id":89297,"date":"2025-05-10T05:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T05:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/89297\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T05:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T05:41:09","slug":"i-left-britain-for-a-better-life-in-barcelona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/89297\/","title":{"rendered":"I left Britain for a better life in Barcelona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tA British man living in Spain is concerned that disrespectful visitors are ruining his city\u00a0\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>A British man who moved abroad for a better life in Barcelona has said that too many visitors and <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/barcelona-ramp-up-tourist-crackdown-rules-bad-behaviour-3632336?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inconsiderate tourists<\/a> are ruining his adopted city.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell Peter Bluett, 32, moved to <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/barcelona?srsltid=AfmBOornjGHH6F9LPNYHRB1ANUKOIgEt5CtPGlbZpVlM5a7asFADijU4&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barcelona<\/a> in 2020 to work in the bar industry after falling in love with the Spanish mindset which he says aims to \u201cenjoy life and stress less and keep things in balance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For Mr Bluett, the UK was too grey, close-minded and had \u201ctunnel vision\u201d. There was \u201ca lack of movement, working endlessly and never getting anywhere\u201d, he said, with little room for personal or professional growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t connect with that mindset, and so I found my home elsewhere. I have a family of friends from all over the world here [in Spain] with me, and they also make this place home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently working on opening his own bar and brunch caf\u00e9 in Barcelona while offering training to hospitality businesses.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_250566782.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3685624\"  \/>Mr Bluett (left) with a colleague at a Barcelona bar where he previously worked<\/p>\n<p>However, despite still enjoying Barcelona, he says he has come to witness the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/barcelona-tourist-crackdown-cruise-ship-3543108?srsltid=AfmBOop9CLAaKwx7OMWWODvrSDQxlY00s1Bg-EfD39DenRYJguONS8Pd&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negative impact of tourism<\/a> on the city, fuelled by its party culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people come for the party and don\u2019t respect the city in terms of taking care of it, and can be noisy in the small barrios [districts], which bothers the neighbours. You\u2019ll see signs in the streets that say \u2018silence at night&#8217;\u201d, Mr Bluett told The i Paper.<\/p>\n<p>He is concerned that undisciplined visitors are ruining Spanish authenticity and uniqueness, and showing a lack of respect and cultural indifference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a big contrast between the locals and the visitors because most people that come and go don\u2019t treat this beautiful city with respect,\u201d he said. \u201cLocal communities feel disrespected by the negative impact the level of tourism and expats are having on the city, from a perspective of a local.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_241826242.jpg\" alt=\"The structure, facade details, and towers form the complete building of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, Spain, on October 9, 2024. He said he knew foreigners who had been living in Barcelona for over 10 years who could barely say more than hola (hello).<\/p>\n<p>Protests against overtourism took place across Spain throughout last year, and last month thousands of people <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/spain-protest-overtourism-mallorca-uk-holidays-3626098?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took to the streets in Spanish 40 cities<\/a> including Barcelona demonstrate over the country\u2019s housing crisis, which they blame on <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/overtourism?srsltid=AfmBOopw-Rz9tb_SuTfP7ok9uadKP6G7vknY2Ea26UBuY2yKdlz1kLkr&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overtourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bluett, who lived in London for 21 years before moving abroad, initially to Gibraltar before relocating to Barcelona three years later, said tourism was also having serious consequences for the rental market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m lucky enough to have found a friend to live with who offers a fair price of \u20ac400 (\u00a3340) for a room in a two-bedroom shared apartment in the Gothic quarter.
