A shop is facing objections to an application to sell alcohol in an area blighted by drink-related problems.<\/p>\n

Global Food Store, on Town Street in Armley, applied for a licence to sell drinks from 9am-11.30pm daily.<\/p>\n

Leeds City Council will consider the application at a Civic Hall hearing on Tuesday (April 21).<\/p>\n

A licensing report said there were objections from West Yorkshire Police, the council\u2019s environmental health department and Labour ward councillor Andy Parnham.<\/p>\n

Street drinking and anti-social behaviour were among the concerns raised.<\/p>\n

The council report said: \u201cIn the last few years residents have reported to the local councillors and MP their concerns about large groups of mostly male street drinkers gathering on Town Street.<\/p>\n

\u201cResidents find this intimidating and have reported feeling that this area is becoming a no-go zone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shop is within a Cumulative\u00a0Impact Area (CIA), officially classed by the council as suffering from high levels of alcohol-related health problems.<\/p>\n

The applicant said measures would be in place to prevent nuisance behaviour, including CCTV and staff training.<\/p>\n

The licence application said any customers who appeared to be aged under 25 would be asked to show ID.<\/p>\n

Councillors will discusss the application and have the option to grant, refuse or allow it with additional conditions.<\/p>\n
