It’s been a challenging year so far for Birmingham’s hospitality businesses.<\/p>\n
As we ticked over into a new financial year, restaurants have been open about the challenges they face, with many adapting to accommodate rising business costs.<\/p>\n
Others have closed completely, though not all due to cost pressures.<\/p>\n

It’s free.<\/strong><\/p>\n In this feature, we’re taking a look at the restaurants and bars that Birmingham lost so far in 2025, along with the reasons given for the closures.<\/p>\n You’ll find there are links in each one, so you can click through for the full story, if you’d like more information.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, you can click here to learn how one business is adjusting its opening hours to help alleviate the strain<\/a>, and the story of another who is putting prices up – plus how the community reacted<\/a> to the news.<\/p>\n Even Birmingham’s elite restaurants, like Michelin Star spot Simpsons, are adjusting menus to adapt to the fact Brummies just don’t always have the money to splash out on expensive meals – read about how they’ve dropped their prices here<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the meantime, here’s that list of closures:<\/p>\n Tapas Revolution<\/strong><\/p>\n Tapas Revolution closed in Grand Central back in January<\/a>, months after getting a ‘zero’ food hygiene rating.<\/p>\n It remains closed to this day, with no sign of a new occupier.<\/p>\n Kilo Ziro<\/strong><\/p>\n Digbeth<\/a> bar Kilo Ziro shut in February for an altogether happier reason<\/a>.<\/p>\n The bosses, Jeanette Wong and Tom Pell, said they were shutting down to focus on their young family after welcoming a new baby.<\/p>\n The space was quickly snapped up by Sophy<\/a>, a female-operated bar that is working to provide a safe space for women in particular.<\/p>\n Roadhouse Diner<\/strong><\/p>\n Another February closure, Roadhouse Diner shut up shop over in Tyseley<\/a>.<\/p>\n The burger and balti spot had only been operating for a year and it cited ‘personal’ reasons for shutting.<\/p>\n Bosses did say at the time that it might be back in the future but there have been no updates as yet.<\/p>\n Bistrot Pierre<\/strong><\/p>\n In early March, Bistrot Pierre confirmed it had closed eight restaurants across the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n That included the Gas Street branch in birmingham<\/a>-city-centre>Birmingham city centre<\/a> and the newly-rebranded Pierre’s caf\u00e9 bar in Sutton Coldfield<\/a>‘s Mulberry Walk development, in Mere Green.<\/p>\n Bodega Cantina<\/strong><\/p>\n After 14 years in Birmingham city centre, Bodega Cantina closed down on Bennetts Hill<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n The spot, which served food inspired by North and South America, blamed the cost of living crisis as one of the reasons it could no longer continue to operate.<\/p>\n The unit remains empty on Bennetts Hill.<\/p>\n Morrisons Cafe<\/strong><\/p>\n Later in March, just after Stirchley<\/a> residents ran McDonald’s<\/a> out of the neighbourhood, another chain closed in the trendy ‘independent republic’<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Morrisons<\/a> Cafe, set within the supermarket, is now blocked off and closed to customers.<\/p>\n The change came as part of a series of closures across Morrisons stores. Stirchley Morrisons will also lose its flower shop.<\/p>\n Chai Ra<\/strong><\/p>\n A cafe on Kings Heath<\/a> High Street closed down after six years at the end of March.<\/p>\n Chai Ra coffee host posted a sign in the window<\/a> to say ‘we’ll be back soon’ though the status changed to ‘permanently closed’ online.<\/p>\n Later, a note from the landlord suggested the lease had been forfeited.<\/p>\n Wingers Taproom<\/strong><\/p>\n Last month it was revealed that Wingers Taproom was up for sale<\/a>.<\/p>\n The old Bun and Barrel restaurant in Harborne<\/a> became a branch of the chicken chain after ‘Birmingham’s best burger bar’ shut down.<\/p>\n Now its future is unknown.<\/p>\n Ask Italian<\/strong><\/p>\n Situated on that big old prominent unit on the corner of New Street and Bennetts Hill, Ask Italian has been a major restaurant feature of one of our busiest streets for more than 10 years.<\/p>\n It closed only this week<\/a>, with very little in the way of explanation.<\/p>\n
