But even if Nicks had a vision for what she wanted her songs to be, she could put her hand up and acknowledge when she was contributing to the problem on some of their albums.

Then again, everyone was at fault in some way when putting together the tracks for Rumoura. While every great album can have a little bit of hardship behind it, the fact that everyone was breaking up with each other had to have made the air in the studio incredibly thick when they were trying to lay down vocals for songs that were written to attack someone else who was in the room.

But by the end of the 1970s, Nicks seemed to at least have a better idea of what she wanted her music to be. She didn’t want to have ‘The Mac’ as her sole outlet anymore, and when working on her solo career, it was better for her to put out her songs rather than watch Lindsey Buckingham twist them into something that she didn’t want. And if the guitarist had his way on Tusk, Bella Donna was her way of getting her songs out into the world.

Her solo career was always going to end up being a monster, but she didn’t really intend it to overshadow what she was doing in her other band. She wanted to be a team player, and while she was the last person to say that she was quitting Fleetwood Mac, she didn’t want to have the same kind of headaches that she was going through when making a record like Tango in the Night ever again.

If you look at what she was doing behind the scenes, though, she was already starting to spiral a little bit. She had tried kicking her cocaine habit, but after settling into her addiction to Klonopin, things were only going to get worse when she started putting out her own records like Street Angel after the fact. And while the band themselves were pissed about her not showing up, they were even more angry when she didn’t seem to be giving it her all when she did come into the studio.

And Nicks didn’t really have a good excuse when working on the record, either, saying in retrospect, “I’d leave and [Lindsey would] take all my vocals off. And I’m not blaming him for that because I’m sure they totally sucked. Vocals done when you’re crazy and drinking a cup of brandy probably aren’t usually going to be great and Lindsey is very precise when recording. … I wasn’t into it.”

But given the rest of the band’s state of mind, it wasn’t like Nicks was the only one going through a tough spot. The music video for ‘Hold Me’ on the previous record had already turned into a shitshow before the filming was even done, and since this record ended with the band not even going on the road after Buckingham quit in protest, it’s not like any of them could claim to be having any fun along the way.

At the same time, the fact that Tango in the Night sounds as good as it does is practically a miracle all things considered. So many people would have cracked under this kind of pressure, but Nicks was able to at least make it across the finish line and be a part of one of the classic lineup’s final masterpieces before they started to fall apart in the late 1980s.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

(Credits: Far Out / Stevie Nicks) Tue 14 April 2026 19:30, UK Not every Fleetwood Mac album was…

[3936
77,43282,269,44868,16,15
0":"post-894454","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-music","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-fleetwood-mac","10":"tag-music","11":"tag-stevie-nicks","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
