Zoonotic threat: staff from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources tracked down a raccoon that escaped from a shipping container after it was opened in the Addendum Lane area in Pembroke (Photograph supplied)<\/p>\n

A raccoon that escaped from a shipping container that had recently arrived at the Hamilton Commercial Docks was safely trapped yesterday by Department of Environment and Natural Resources staff.<\/p>\n

The animal was discovered when the container arrived at Addendum Lane in Pembroke.<\/p>\n

Animal wardens and the government veterinarian responded, locating the animal beneath a dumpster.<\/p>\n

Raccoons, which present an environmental hazard to Bermuda, have arrived through shipping containers a number of times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They are not native to the island and thus pose \u201ca serious biosecurity concern\u201d as carriers of \u201ca range of diseases and parasites that pose a risk to people, pets, livestock and wildlife,\u201d the department said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese include serious zoonotic threats such as rabies and raccoon roundworm, as well as other infectious diseases and parasites that are not present in Bermuda.\u201d<\/p>\n

The department said the animal would be humanely put down.<\/p>\n
