These are foods that are in their      natural state or barely altered. They include things like carrots, apples,      and milk.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"7.3\"><strong data-node-id=\"7.3.0\">Processed      culinary ingredients<\/strong>. Foods in this category are made from minimal      processing like pressing, refining, grinding, or milling, like olive oil      or flour. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"7.5\"><strong data-node-id=\"7.5.0\">Processed foods<\/strong>. Processed      foods are altered from their usual state. They typically contain sugar,      oil, salt, or other substances. Canned tuna and certain cheeses fall into      this category. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"7.7\"><strong data-node-id=\"7.7.0\">Ultra-processed      foods. <\/strong>These      foods are processed but have added ingredients like artificial colors and      flavors, preservatives for shelf stability, and ingredients to preserve      texture. Those foods include:<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"14.1\">Frozen foods<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.3\">Sodas<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.5\">Hot      dogs<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.7\">Deli      meat<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.9\">Fast      food<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.11\">Packaged      cookies<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.13\">Cakes<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.15\">Salty      snacks<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.17\">Plant-based      milks<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.19\">Jarred      sauces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"15.0\">Should I avoid ultra-processed foods?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">This is tricky. Because ultra-processed foods make up the majority of our country\u2019s food supply, this is more difficult than it sounds. Also, there\u2019s a growing movement in the nutritional community to consider food processing on more of a spectrum versus nixing ultra-processed foods altogether. One example: While plant-based milks are technically ultra-processed foods, they&#8217;re not as unhealthy as, say, a bag of chips.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cThe current classification system takes a huge chunk out of the food supply,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/cdnm.bwh.harvard.edu\/giulia-menichetti-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/cdnm.bwh.harvard.edu\/giulia-menichetti-phd\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Giulia Menichetti, PhD\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Giulia Menichetti, PhD<\/a>, an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and investigator in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital. \u201cBut more research shows that not all of these foods are equally bad for our health.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Related Stories<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">That said, if you have the option of swapping an ultra-processed food for a more natural counterpart, it\u2019s often good to go with that. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cA good rule of thumb is to focus on whole or minimally-processed options that provide essential nutrients and keep you feeling satisfied,\u201d Keatley says. \u201cFor instance, instead of sugary beverages, try infusing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a63518521\/carbonated-water-weight-loss-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a63518521\/carbonated-water-weight-loss-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sparkling water\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">sparkling water<\/a> with slices of fruit, which offers flavor without the added sugars.
