{"id":89653,"date":"2025-05-10T08:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T08:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/89653\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T08:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T08:54:10","slug":"marta-kostyuk-shakes-daria-kasatkinas-hand-at-italian-open-after-defection-from-russia-to-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/89653\/","title":{"rendered":"Marta Kostyuk shakes Daria Kasatkina&#8217;s hand at Italian Open after defection from Russia to Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Daria Kasatkina&#8217;s switch from Russian tennis to play for Australia has been given the seal of approval from her Ukrainian opponent at the Italian Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Marta Kostyuk, one of the women&#8217;s tour&#8217;s in-form players, made a high-profile point along with many of her fellow Ukrainian players of never shaking hands with Russian or Belarusian opponents after matches in protest at the invasion of her homeland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That included after a tight loss to world number one Aryna Sabalenka at last week&#8217;s Madrid Open, but after defeating <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-29\/daria-kasatkina-switches-allegiances-to-represent-australia\/105112096\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105112096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kasatkina for the first time since the world number 15 switched allegiance to Australia in March<\/a>, Kostyuk was quick to offer her hand at the net.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After the 6-4, 6-2 second-round win, Kostyuk praised Kasatkina for what she believed was a courageous stand she had taken against Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kasatkina took permanent Australian residency earlier this year, having criticised Russia&#8217;s anti-LGBTQ+ laws as well as the war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s always nice to shake hands with someone I respect,&#8221; Kostyuk said after the match, adding that she hoped Kasatkina would continue to speak out against the war now she had the &#8220;freedom&#8221; to do so.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tennis player Daria Kasatkina clenches her fist during a tennis match.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/136bbb5dc54896e51fcd5038b11d9e7f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kasatkina made the switch from representing Russia to Australia in late March. (Getty Images: Robert Prange)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Russian and Belarusian players are still playing under no flags at tournaments due to the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When someone not only tells the truth \u2014 calling Russia the aggressor \u2014 but also acts on it, that deserves respect,&#8221; the 22-year-old noted in an Instagram post before the match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Daria Kasatkina has clearly spoken out against the war and made the decision to give up her Russian sports citizenship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This takes courage \u2014 and I acknowledge it.
