A Solihull pet sitter and her partner have been sentenced after shocking videos emerged of them dragging, kicking, hitting and screaming at dogs they were being paid to care for.<\/p>\n

Pregnant Paige Williams, 26, of Kenilworth Road, Knowle<\/a>, billed a family \u00a31,400 to take care of their three dogs, two cats and two birds while the owners were on a four-week holiday in July and August 2024.<\/p>\n

Her 27-year-old partner, Bradley Regan Archer, joined Williams at the family\u2019s Balsall Common<\/a> home to help ‘take care’ of the animals – but what followed was weeks of animal abuse.<\/p>\n

When the family returned from holiday they watched footage, captured on kitchen and garden cameras, revealing the abuse.<\/p>\n

The family submitted 51 videos of evidence to the RSPCA<\/a> which launched an investigation.<\/p>\n

All attacks involved their 13-month-old dog, Ayrton, and a three-year-old dog, Frieda, both German Shorthaired Pointers. They did not relate to the third dog, the cats or the birds.<\/p>\n

Williams and Archer were caught on camera shouting and swearing at the dogs, dragging Ayrton and Freida by their collars, holding them off the ground, and pushing them through doorways and to the floor.<\/p>\n

Commercial petsitter Williams operated under the name Fur & Filly PetCare Services. The dog owners did not pay the invoice after uncovering the abuse.<\/p>\n

In one clip, Williams, seemingly aware of the cameras, appeared to address the owners directly. She said: “I will never look after your dogs again, my animals have suffered this month. My animals. I\u2019ve had enough.”<\/p>\n

The couple appeared at Coventry Magistrates\u2019 Court on Wednesday, April 8, after Williams pleaded guilty to one offence of failing to meet the needs of two dogs under section nine of the Animal Welfare Act.<\/p>\n

Archer, previously of Balsall Street, Balsall Common<\/a>, had pleaded not guilty and was due to stand trial but changed his plea on the day.<\/p>\n

Magistrates sentenced Williams to a 12-month community order with 140 hours of unpaid work and ordered her to pay \u00a3350 costs and a \u00a3114 victim surcharge.<\/p>\n

Archer, who had stayed at the property throughout the four weeks, was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 40 hours of unpaid work. The court ordered him to pay \u00a3750 costs and a \u00a3114 victim surcharge.<\/p>\n

Both were banned from keeping all animals for seven years.<\/p>\n

RSPCA Inspector Ben Jones carried out the investigation on behalf of the animal welfare charity.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the case, he said: “It\u2019s a big decision to leave your pets in the care of someone else and, in this case, the family were leaving their pets with someone they felt they could trust.<\/p>\n

“Sadly, Williams and Archer betrayed their trust with care that fell below the standards the law requires, with Ayrton and Feida subject to four weeks of abuse.<\/p>\n

“What made this case even more shocking is that they were clearly aware of the presence of the cameras and even appeared to speak directly to the dogs\u2019 owners through the cameras amid such inappropriate animal care.”<\/p>\n

Mr Jones added: “Poor Ayrton seemed to be at the sharp end of most of Williams’ and Mr Archer\u2019s anger. He was locked in a crate which left him crying and whining, he was tethered to a tree – with water left just out of his reach – and he was chased around the garden and threatened with a stick.<\/p>\n

“He was handled very inappropriately, with a slip lead used to yank him around and even flip him up into the air. When he jumped up at Archer he was whipped at several times with the same lead.”<\/p>\n

A vet, who watched the footage, said in a statement to the court that Ayrton and Frieda showed signs of anxiety and stress.<\/p>\n

She said: “Both dogs are handled in a way that would [have] negatively affected their mental welfare and their physical welfare.”<\/p>\n

In mitigation, the court heard Ayrton was a lively, young dog who could be challenging to deal with.<\/p>\n

Magistrates were told Williams was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time and was struggling to cope with hormonal changes.<\/p>\n

The court heard the family had been introduced to Williams by a friend and had used her several times over the years, with no concerns, before asking her to have the animals. They left instructions to care for them as well as emergency numbers.<\/p>\n

Mr Jones said: \u201cThey had no concerns about their pets until they returned home and found them to be quieter than normal, cowering if their son was too loud when playing. When they checked the cameras they were shocked by what they found.\u201d<\/p>\n
