The Jawbone Tavern, which has been found on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/litherland\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Litherland<\/a> Road in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/sefton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sefton<\/a> town since 1802, has turned an empty space next to the pub into a beer garden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/one-merseysides-oldest-pubs-reopens-30019914\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Since reopening in September 2024Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Since reopening in September 2024<\/a>, the Jawbone has been a big hit with its regulars. It was taken over by new owners who updated the venue while retaining its rich history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The pub, which was named after the whaling fleets based at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"BootleLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a> Docks, has survived two World Wars and was once owned by title winning Liverpool FC footballer, Jock McNab. It has served thousands of people in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a> over more than 200 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The new beer garden includes a mural by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/arts-culture-news\/the-best-part-job-you-28597125\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Liverpool artist Paul CurtisLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool artist Paul Curtis<\/a>, who specialises in street art and large murals. Since 2017, Paul has created more than 250 public pieces, across the UK, with most of his work found around Merseyside.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_JAWBONE_TAVERN_DHAY-2JPG.jpg\" alt=\"The Jawbone Tavern in Bootle is opening a beer garden\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Jawbone Tavern in Bootle is opening a beer garden(Image: The Jawbone Tavern)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the Jawbone, Paul&#8217;s mural marks the history of whaling. It depicts a boat of men heading out to sea, with a whale appearing behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nicola <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/halton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Halton<\/a>, a spokesperson for Jawbone Tavern, said: &#8220;When we took over the site we had plans to create a new outdoor space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;After a lot of hard work and the assistance of the fantastic artist, Paul Curtis, stage one and stage two of the beer garden build are now fully completed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;With a capacity for 80 customers the beer garden is a great sun trap at the rear of the pub and we think it looks fantastic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dave Mcnally, general manager of the Jawbone Tavern, added &#8220;We would like to thank Paul Curtis for his great work and think this has added to this local institution which is the Jawbone Tavern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Paul came up with the idea of the whaling image, as the pub\u2019s name came from the links to the whaling vessels that sailed from Bootle Docks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_d6e9b352-ca16-4807-8596-4662fb7bd880.jpg\" alt=\"Artist Paul Curtis with his work at Bootle's Jawbone Tavern\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Artist Paul Curtis with his work at Bootle&#8217;s Jawbone Tavern(Image: Paul Curtis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Whilst whaling is now illegal in the UK, and rightly so, we felt that this would be a way of sharing the pub\u2019s history whilst also brightening up our new beer garden area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">About the Jawbone&#8217;s history, former owner, Harry Sandle, who operated the venue through the pandemic and its hospitality-related restrictions, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/story-behind-new-mural-one-31151408\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"previously saidLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">previously said<\/a>: &#8220;The Merton, round the corner from us, was also seconded as a hospital for the American soldiers during the war, and a lot of the Americans used to come into the Jawbone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The soldiers that were in the hospital would be short of money, but they would come in for a pint and pawn their watches to Jock so they could get a drink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Apparently, Jock had a safe full of American watches, and he made a fortune from it; a lot of them didn&#8217;t have the money to get them back off him. They were all exchanged for a couple of pints.
