There were no compulsory redundancies.<\/p>\n<p>The new Standard Digital operation covers the brand\u2019s digital journalism, commercial solutions, adtech and data management.<\/p>\n<p>It will sit alongside a new Standard Studio developing podcasts, social video channels and newsletters, following in the footsteps <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/publishers\/independents-video-and-podcast-studio-aims-to-become-biggest-revenue-driver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of Independent Studio which launched last year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Independent Media has had a similar licensing partnership deal to <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/the-wire\/media-mergers-news-tracker\/the-independent-buzzfeed-uk-partnership-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operate Buzzfeed, Huffpost, Tasty and Seasoned in the UK and Ireland since March 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Evening Standard Limited will continue to run the print editorial output of the Standard\u2019s weekly magazine edition as a separate company. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/subject\/evgeny-lebedev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lord Evgeny Lebedev<\/a> is the controlling shareholder of the Standard and is also the largest single shareholder of <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/subject\/the-independent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Independent<\/a>. Both businesses are based in the same London building.<\/p>\n<p>The Evening Standard had 346 staff members when Lebedev first bought it in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Planned roles on the Standard website in the new structure include: editor, several publishing hub editors, chief reporter, chief political correspondent, four reporters, two entertainment and life reporters, an e-commerce editor, six sports reporters, two audience editors and two video journalists. Specialist correspondent roles being cut include: crime, transport and City Hall. <\/p>\n<p>There are also four dedicated commercial roles in the new Standard online team.<\/p>\n<p>Sadness at Standard over loss of \u2018inherited wisdom\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A well-placed source told Press Gazette: \u201cWe all loved the paper, loved our colleagues, loved the patch and didn\u2019t want to leave but didn\u2019t feel we had any realistic opportunity to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They shared their \u201csadness\u201d at what had happened, adding that \u201clots of inherited wisdom has been lost\u201d and they \u201chad a great innings and it was a great paper while it was great\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/media-audience-and-business-data\/media_metrics\/most-popular-websites-news-uk-monthly-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In February The Independent was the seventh biggest newsbrand in the UK<\/a> with an audience of 17.6 million people, down 6% month on month and 3% year on year \u2013 according to digital data collected by Ipsos iris.<\/p>\n<p>The Standard was in eighteenth place with an audience of 7.9 million (down 16% compared to January and 21% compared to February 2025).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/news\/independent-set-to-take-over-running-standard-website\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The takeover was originally due to take effect on 1 March<\/a>.
