These include efforts to improve drone defence systems, strengthen surveillance along the EU’s eastern borders, enhance air defence capabilities, and expand space-based security infrastructure.

More than 15 of the selected projects directly contribute to these flagship programmes. One of these programmes will focus on improving drone propulsion and thermal systems, advancing next-generation aerial defence technologies. In addition to these targeted efforts, several cross-cutting projects will provide support in areas such as sensor technology, digital systems, and cybersecurity.

Innovation and industry collaboration

The selected projects highlight a strong emphasis on innovation and collaboration. A total of 634 organisations from 26 EU member states and Norway are involved, ranging from major defence contractors to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs account for over 38% of participants and will receive more than one-fifth of the total funding.

To encourage fresh ideas and new entrants into the defence sector, some projects will offer smaller funding opportunities to start-ups and SMEs. These sub-calls will provide up to €60,000 per company, enabling smaller players to contribute innovative solutions, particularly in the development of affordable drone technologies.

The EDF also shows a deepening partnership between the EU and Ukraine in the defence sector. Ukrainian companies are participating in several projects, supported by the EU Defence Innovation Office in Kyiv. This collaboration aims to integrate Ukraine more closely into the European defence industrial base while benefiting from its recent battlefield experience.

One project in particular will focus on developing an AI-powered cyber defence system designed to protect drone swarms from digital threats. The inclusion of Ukrainian expertise is expected to provide valuable real-world insights into modern warfare challenges.

Funding breakdown

Of the total investment, €675 million will be allocated to 32 projects focused on developing defence capabilities, while €332 million will support 25 research initiatives. This balance reflects the EU’s dual focus on immediate operational needs and long-term technological advancement.

Following the selection process, the European Commission will now begin preparing grant agreements with the project consortia. These agreements are expected to be finalised before the end of the year, allowing work on the new initiatives to begin.

This funding round marks the fifth cycle of EDF calls and has attracted a record 410 proposals, a 37% increase over the previous year. The growing interest highlights the EDF’s expanding role as a central tool in shaping Europe’s defence future.

With a total budget of €7.3 billion for the 2021–2027 period, the European Defence Fund continues to drive collaboration, innovation, and strategic autonomy across the EU’s defence sector.

image: ©sankai | iStock The European Commission has confirmed it will invest 1.7 billion in 57 new defence…

[5174
13312,2993,213992,2000,299,5187,2557
post-900316","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-eu","tag-cyber-security","tag-defence","tag-drone-technology","tag-eu","tag-europe","tag-european","tag-european-commission
["GET
