{"id":903256,"date":"2026-04-18T18:12:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T18:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/903256\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T18:12:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T18:12:37","slug":"joan-burstein-london-retail-trailblazer-fashion-champion-dies-at-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/903256\/","title":{"rendered":"Joan Burstein, London Retail Trailblazer, Fashion Champion, Dies at 100"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/london\/\" id=\"auto-tag_london\" data-tag=\"london\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LONDON<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 Joan Burstein, the pioneering retailer who helped build European and American brands in the U.K., and who championed designers including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan when they were still students, has died at 100, according to her family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein, known affectionately as \u201cMrs. B,\u201d was born on February 21, 1926 and died on Friday, April 17 at home in Ibiza where she lived following her retirement. She moved there after the sale of <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/browns\/\" id=\"auto-tag_browns\" data-tag=\"browns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Browns<\/a>, the independent London retailer she founded with her equally charming, business-minded \u2014 and a bit tougher \u2014 husband Sidney Burstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein\u2019s family said she died peacefully, surrounded by her family. \u201cEarlier this year, she celebrated her 100th birthday in joyful style \u2013 dancing to a swing band and surrounded by those who loved her, which was entirely fitting for a life so vibrantly lived,\u201d said her son <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/simon-burstein\/\" id=\"auto-tag_simon-burstein\" data-tag=\"simon-burstein\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Simon Burstein<\/a> and daughter Caroline Hammond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cShe leaves behind an enormous legacy and will be profoundly missed by her two children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and the many people whose lives she touched,\u201d they added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJoan and Sidney Burstein started their retail business with a single market stall in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/vivienne-westwood-teams-george-cox-brothel-creeper-capsule-1238917327\/\" id=\"related_article_link_london\" data-tag=\"london\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, co-founded <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/eye\/people\/joan-burstein-turning-100-eager-spot-new-talent-galliano-1238616816\/\" id=\"related_article_link_browns\" data-tag=\"browns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Browns<\/a> in 1970 with a store on South Molton Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt quickly became the go-to place for women who loved fashion, and who were willing to experiment with new names from New York, Milan and Paris including Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Missoni, which Burstein introduced to the U.K. market.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" of derring-do, determination \u2014 and a willingness to defy convention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith Sidney keeping a close eye on the books, Joan steered the buy and the merchandising, with Browns famously launching and nurturing Galliano\u2019s, McQueen\u2019s and Chalayan\u2019s labels. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the early days, the Browns mix included Walter Albini for Callaghan, Karl Lagerfeld for Chlo\u00e9, Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander, Calvin Klein and\u00a0 Comme des Gar\u00e7ons, which were still relatively small when she bought their collections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOther designers and entrepreneurs, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/eye\/parties\/john-galliano-alber-elbaz-manolo-blahnik-birthday-joan-burstein-10363496\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including Paul Smith, Manolo Blahnik, Liz Earle, and Richard James, all cut their teeth at Browns, designing, buying, or working on the shop floor.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein had a gimlet eye for talent, but was also a born retailer who took good care of her customers.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img We got to know their names and all about them. You really wanted to look after your customer, to help them. You wanted them to come to you because you\u2019ve got the best of the best,\u201d Burstein told WWD in an interview to mark Browns\u2019 50th anniversary in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe would always tell her salespeople never to let anybody out of the shop \u201cnot looking good in what they\u2019ve bought. We weren\u2019t selling on commission. You need to give pleasure to your customer and your customer gets pleasure from you,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the early days of the store, when clients included Julie Christie, Linda McCartney and Claire Bloom, Burstein said her aim was to \u201cdress all those beautiful young people, to make them aware of how they could look, how they could love their clothes. I think I just wanted to make people happy as well as [attracting] customers. I wanted them to feel joyous when they walked out of Browns with their possessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne of the highlights of Burstein\u2019s years at Browns was holding a one-off sale where every item cost 25 pounds. \u201cIt was the most wonderful day, and a really lovely thing to be able to do \u2013 just to make people happy,\u201d said Burstein, who was warm, funny and always cut a glamorous figure. <\/p>\n<p>With her soft-spoken voice, glint in her eye and slight smile as if you and she were in on a private joke, she always had the air of a true English grande dame \u2013 think Maggie Smith in \u201cDownton Abbey.\u201d But beneath that exterior was a steely determination and that slight smile and glint could quickly turn into a frown and burning fire in her eyes if she disapproved of something or felt someone did not properly respect Browns. Her husband would be more blunt, expressing his disapproval in salty language and louder voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs the years passed, Burstein continued to pursue her mission of discovering and promoting young talent, and adding new, international labels to Browns\u2019 eclectic mix, adding menswear, jewelry and accessories to the ever-expanding series of interconnecting shopfronts on South Molton Street that made up Browns. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mrsb2.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"300\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tJoan Burstein and her daughter Caroline Burstein<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTim Jenkins<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe family later opened Browns Focus, a space for young designers including Christopher Kane and Simone Rocha, Labels for Less, Browns Bride and Browns Shoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Bursteins also would open the first UK stores for Armani, and Calvin Klein, both on South Molton Street, and, in a joint venture, Ralph Lauren on New Bond Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI owe my career to Mrs. B.,\u201d said Galliano at Burstein\u2019s 90th birthday at Claridge\u2019s. \u201cShe came to see my graduate collection in 1984, and before I knew it, I was in the window at Browns \u2014 and my first customer was Diana Ross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnother guest, Alber Elbaz, said every time he added a sleeve to a dress, he thought of Burstein. \u201cShe would come into the showroom, tell me how much she liked the collection, and then ask \u2018Where are the sleeves?&#8217;\u201d Elbaz said. \u201cShe supported all of us designers, but it was never done in a heavy way. It was never \u2018Oh, here comes the queen! It\u2019s more like here comes my aunt.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein\u2019s efforts were recognized in 2006, when she was awarded a CBE in acknowledgement of her support of the British Fashion industry. Benett\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEven after her retirement and the sale to Farfetch, her approach to selling, and her values, never wavered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein said that she and her buyers lived by the maxim: \u201c\u2018When in doubt, leave it out.\u2019 If you\u2019ve got any doubt about anything that you\u2019re about to buy, forget it, just drop it. Your first instincts are usually the best. That, to me, was very important, really. Integrity. A great part of the whole philosophy of Browns was integrity,\u201d she told WWD in 2000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt her 90th birthday celebration, where guests included Smith, Blahnik, Stephen Jones, Rita and Angela Missoni, Philip Green, Nicole Farhi and David Hare, Burstein\u2019s son Simon compared her to Queen Elizabeth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe two certainly had a lot in common: they were born the same year, within months of each other, they loved the same colors and carried Launer handbags. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe said his proudest moment was seeing his mother chatting endlessly with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, when she received her CBE, Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire honor, in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe was brimming with energy \u2013 and opinions about fashion \u2013 until the very end. In an interview in February, she told WWD that while Galliano \u201cstill has it,\u201d times have changed since she founded Browns, the pioneering multibrand retailer, in 1970.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere isn\u2019t the same talent as in the 1980s and 1990s,\u201d she said. \u201cToday the designers are doing their own thing. It isn\u2019t the same as when Yves Saint Laurent, Sonia Rykiel and others had their signature, and dressed their customers from head to toe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe added: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean there isn\u2019t talent \u2014 it just doesn\u2019t last as long. I would love to discover real new talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein is survived by her son Simon, founder of Leathersmith, which sells men\u2019s clothing, accessories and luxury paper products, and daughter Caroline Hammond, an artist.
