Guinness cakes opens in Scots city<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Motherwell has handy commuter links, with three train stations and the M74 and M8 close by.<\/p>\n<p>The post-industrial town has an average house price of \u00a3218,526, compared to \u00a3277,495 in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>Motherwell\u2019s average room rental price of \u00a3509 per month was also found to be the cheapest in Scotland among the commuter towns analysed.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, moving to Livingston, which is just a 24-minute commute from Edinburgh, would save you a huge \u00a31,726 a year \u2013 even with travel costs factored in.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d pay just \u00a3580 a month in rent on average, compared with \u00a3813 in Edinburgh \u2013 a saving of \u00a3233 a month, or \u00a32,796 a year.<\/p>\n<p>Your yearly travel into the city three days a week would set you back about \u00a31,070 a, still leaving you with plenty of savings.<\/p>\n<p>If you were to buy the average house price in Livingston is \u00a3290,364, according to Lloyds Banking group.<\/p>\n<p>The area is much more affordable than the capital, where it is \u00a3352,996.<\/p>\n<p>Livingston is the biggest town in West Lothian and is known for its good shopping, including the Livingston Designer Outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Kilmarnock, around half an hour from Glasgow, was found to have the highest priced rooms among the Scottish commuter towns analysed, with average rents costing \u00a3588 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Hutchinson, director of SpareRoom, said: \u201cGiven how high rents are now compared to where they were five years ago, people are faced with no choice but to chase affordability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen even flatsharers are turning away from major cities to surrounding towns, you know there\u2019s a huge problem with affordability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s really important to weigh up the cost of a longer commute versus the potential savings on rent before making a move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Motherwell is an affordable town for people who work in Glasgow Credit: Alamy<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SCOTLAND\u2019S cheapest commuter towns where you could save as much as \u00a31,700 a year have been revealed.
