Their efforts were lost in translation. \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Growing pains<\/p>\n<p>At finance industry gatherings in D.C.&#8217;s office buildings and historic hotels, the EU\u2019s efforts to boost growth and stimulate investment by removing fragmentation in European capital markets was seen by industry and regulators alike with either curiosity, because they don\u2019t understand the project, or skepticism because they doubt the EU can get over its internal rivalries and integrate.<\/p>\n<p>This week Bessent reiterated the U.S. mantra that \u201cthe biggest risk to financial stability is a lack of growth,\u201d accusing the EU of being \u201cunable to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ursula-von-der-leyen-mission-europe-economy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ursula-von-der-leyen-mission-europe-economy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Draghi Report<\/a> \u2026 on how it would increase growth.\u201d The existence of the bloc should \u201cfacilitate trade among the members, make it more seamless, create more prosperity, and it turns out it has probably been a hindrance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Europeans struck a more conciliatory tone. U.K. Finance Minister Rachel Reeves said Britain&#8217;s trade deal with the U.S. is \u201cin both of our countries&#8217; interests,\u201d and said technical work with U.S. counterparts on the future of capital markets and financial services is moving forward. \u201cThat relationship and that work together continues,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis also played up the transatlantic ties. \u201cIn the face of common challenges, the U.S. and the EU are stronger together.
