Keith Dibb, aged 90, is believed to be the oldest umpire in the country and has taken charge of more than 1,000 matches over the course of his cricketing career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He proudly takes his white umpire&#8217;s coat everywhere, packing them when he goes on his holidays, which has led to him overseeing matches in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/Australia\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Australia<\/a>, New Zealand and Barbados.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Even his two shoulder operations and knee replacement surgery couldn&#8217;t stop him turning out every weekend.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0_GMN_KEITH_DIBB_UMPIRE_28JPG.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Keith pictured at Hawksworth 1952 where he played for 50 years\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Keith pictured at Hawksworth 1952 where he played for 50 years(Image: \u00a9 Glen Minikin)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Now the pensioner from Leeds is passing on his wealth of experience as he mentors new officials in the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It\u2019s been wonderful meeting all the people over the years,\u201d he told The <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Mirror<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m not as sharp as I was. I&#8217;m mentoring now because I&#8217;ve now had another operation for a knee replacement and I&#8217;m a bit slow moving, so the league said \u2018we don&#8217;t want you to get hurt so we&#8217;d rather you mentor\u2019. So I will be showing people the ropes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He told of the joy he gets from meeting people including his latest trip to Headingley for four days to watch the county match. \u201cThere&#8217;s people I haven&#8217;t seen for 20 years and they said, excuse me for swearing; \u2018bloody hell are you still about?\u2019 <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"\/>That was wonderful. It\u2019s a bit like an occupation. I\u2019ve met so many people. \u201c<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0_GMN_KEITH_DIBB_UMPIRE_17JPG.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Proud Keith, 90, says he takes his umpiring whites everywhere \" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Proud Keith, 90, says he takes his umpiring whites everywhere (Image: \u00a9 Glen Minikin)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He was 13 when he caught the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">cricket<\/a> bug, joining his local side in North Yorkshire, before sneaking into Headingley and saw Don Bradman score an unbeaten 173 for Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He sadly lost his wife to coronavirus after 59 years, who was often by his side making teas for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Widower Keith, a retired salesman, is 6ft 4in tall and says he was often mistaken for a police officer by cricketers but had to call the real officers in during a match a few seasons ago. He said as \u201cwonderful\u201d as the sport is \u201cthere\u2019s always a bit of controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;A player came up to me and started abusing me. He started off by saying you are &#8216;slowing the game down&#8217;. The player &#8211; not the captain. He had a real go at me. Then he said, \u2018you are slow giving decisions\u2019. Well, you don&#8217;t give a fast decision because you want to do the right thing with LBW. So I said, under the new regulations from the ECB, I&#8217;m sending you off. He says, \u2018I&#8217;m not going\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI said if I take the bells off those wickets, the game&#8217;s finished, and the team took him off. They escorted him off. There were two batsmen waiting to come in with their pads on, they started speaking to him. And they started kicking him in the you-knows-where and grabbing him by the throat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI thought, well, I&#8217;m not in a position to start trying to stop him, so I called the police. They came within five minutes with the lights on and they came up to me after us and said; \u2018We thought cricket was a gentleman&#8217;s game\u2019. I said, \u2018it is\u2019. . She got four wickets. So she&#8217;s a good player.
