This determines publications that have not been legally penalised should not be excluded on &#8216;moral or political ground&#8217; alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The book is also understood to be stocked at <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/eccles\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Eccles<\/a> Library. <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Salford<\/a> Council has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Trying to present alternative facts as reality&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Proud Trust, a Manchester-based organisation which supports LGBTQ+ young people across the country through youth groups, peer support, and mentoring programs, told the M.E.N. it has often heard from parents seeking to support their children but are unsure of the correct information or resources to use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesperson said: \u201cIt is vital that parents of trans and non-binary young people can access accurate and reliable information to best inform them in supporting their child, libraries must serve to ensure the information they are supplying the public with is accurate and trustworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When Kids Say They&#8217;re Trans suggests that puberty blockers are &#8216;usually the first medical intervention&#8217; that is offered, with its co-authors sharing the belief that young people can &#8216;access most medical interventions without significant assessment, evaluation or exploration&#8217;. However, the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">NHS<\/a> reports that puberty blockers are no longer available to children and young people due to a lack of evidence on their safety and effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">According to NHS guidelines, hormone therapy and gender-affirming hormones are also only available to children and young people who meet a strict criteria, which also includes a referral from a hormone specialist and a psychological report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Campaigners say the book also suggests that puberty blockers can cause infertility, something which there is limited evidence to back up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Published in 2024, The Cass Review independently looked into the gender services available for children and young people in England, including transgender youth and those with gender dysphoria. The report concluded that there was unclear evidence to support the use of \u2018puberty suppression\u2019 and such medication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The M.E.N. has made attempts to reach out to co-authors Lisa Marchiano, Stella O&#8217;Malley, Sasha Ayad and publishers Swift Press for comment. Reviews on Amazon are polarising, where it is described as &#8216;essential reading for effective parents&#8217; and &#8216;important&#8217;, at the same time as being dismissed as &#8216;dangerous and outrageously irresponsible&#8217; or a &#8216;DIY child torture manual in disguise&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Campaigners have also highlighted O\u2019Malley, one of the authors of the book, is the executive director and founder of Genspect, an organisation which has been described as an \u2019gender-critical anti-trans group\u2019 online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Meanwhile, fellow author Marchiano has compared the rise in transgender young people to that of a \u2018psychic epidemic\u2019, whilst co-authors Ayad and O&#8217;Malley hosted the Gender: A Wider Lens podcast together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Not about censorship but responsible governance&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Following <a aria-label=\"QueerAF\u2019s investigationLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wearequeeraf.com\/exclusive-58-uk-public-libraries-have-parenting-books-encouraging-desistance-and-detransitioning\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">QueerAF\u2019s investigation<\/a>, one person who contacted Manchester Council regarding the book said they were concerned it is &#8216;aligned with practices that are widely understood by medical bodies, safeguarding organisations, and human rights groups to be harmful to children\u2019s mental health and wellbeing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In an email to the council, the resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said their concern was \u2018not about censorship, but about responsible governance, child protection and public trust\u2019, and asked the council whether the book\u2019s material had been reviewed by professionals with expertise in child welfare and mental health. They also asked what steps had been taken to ensure public resources do not inadvertently promote harmful practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a response, Manchester Council told the resident the book had passed its strict library policy regarding censorship, adding that it subscribed to the CILIP declaration that says library services are to provide all books which \u2018satisfy any sectional interest\u2019, as long as it has \u2018not incurred penalties under the law\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council&#8217;s reply added that the book was chosen to be stocked at the library as it was \u2018published by a renowned publisher\u2019, and was \u2018requested by another customer and was a big seller\u2019. Speaking to the M.E.N., they said: \u201cI think I was most surprised by the argument that it was fine because it was deemed to be a \u2018big seller\u2019. Is that what basis they now use to stock books? It\u2019s very disappointing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cMy concern when I first found out this book was being stocked at Central Library is that it is designed to be a self-help book &#8211; that\u2019s the naughty thing about it. With the title, you think it might be helpful but it preys on the concern of parents who might of found out their children is questioning their gender. But it\u2019s a very harmful book, in my opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They added: &#8220;They basically say right from the beginning that they feel there is no such thing as a trans child.
