{"id":907053,"date":"2026-04-20T15:31:49","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T15:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/907053\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T15:31:49","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T15:31:49","slug":"a-choir-of-350-singers-will-perform-at-liverpools-iconic-cathedral-this-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/907053\/","title":{"rendered":"A choir of 350 singers will perform at Liverpool&#8217;s iconic Cathedral this May"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Liverpool Cathedral is set to host a magnificent performance of one of the greatest masterpieces in the choral range of music.<\/p>\n<p>Felix Mandelssohn\u2019s Elijah will be brought to life in the breathtaking surroundings of Liverpool Cathedral on 16th May.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0powerful and dramatic\u00a0musical story\u00a0tells the\u00a0journey\u00a0of the prophet Elijah, as depicted in book 1 and 2 Kings in the Old Testament.\u00a0Through moments of deep faith, struggle and divine encounter, Mendelssohn\u2019s rich and expressive\u00a0tale\u00a0creates a moving and unforgettable musical journey to be enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p>This special, full-work performance will bring together the Liverpool Cathedral Choir alongside a massed choir of singers from across the North West,\u00a0flooding\u00a0the Cathedral with an extraordinary depth of sound. The scale and ambition of this collaboration promises a truly memorable experience for audiences.<\/p>\n<p>The role of Elijah will be performed by Andrew Greenan, joined by an outstanding line-up of soloists: Kelsey Thomas, Joyce Tindsley and Stefan Kennedy. The performance will be accompanied by the Liverpool Concert Orchestra, with the Cathedral organ played by\u00a0Ian Tracey\u00a0in what will be one of his final major performances before he retires as Organist of Liverpool Cathedral later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Ian became the youngest cathedral organist in the UK when he was appointed to Liverpool Cathedral in 1980. And let\u2019s not forget, this will be one of Ian Tracey\u2019s final performances as Cathedral Organist, making the occasion all the more memorable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephen Mannings, Director of Music at Liverpool Cathedral, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMendelssohn\u2019s Elijah ranks alongside Handel\u2019s Messiah as being one of the all-time great oratorios. We have 350 singers in our chorus alongside the wonderful soloists mentioned. Andrew Greenan \u2013 principal soloist \u2013 first sang the role of Elijah exactly 40 years ago in Liverpool Cathedral, so it\u2019s fantastic to have him reprise this role with us. An ensemble of 40 players from the Liverpool Concert Orchestra and the cathedral organ played by Professor Ian Tracey will add breathtaking majesty to the combined choral sound as we bring to life one of the most remembered biblical narratives.
