They also have higher levels of oestrogen \u2013 an anticatabolic hormone, which prevents the breakdown of muscle tissue. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25047853\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25047853\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Studies\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies<\/a> show that both of these factors combined mean that women can recover faster than men during workouts, using shorter rest periods. Consider incorporating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a61483477\/what-is-a-superset\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a61483477\/what-is-a-superset\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"supersets\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">supersets<\/a>, performing two exercises back-to-back before resting; your husband would be better off sticking with single sets.<\/p>\n<p>2. You would benefit from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a40743707\/weight-lifting-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a40743707\/weight-lifting-for-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lifting\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">lifting<\/a> with more control and less explosion.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>4. This means less production of hydrogen ions (a substance released during muscle metabolism that makes your muscles burn), because blood flow is directed to your working muscles more efficiently. In turn, you may not feel the so-called \u2018burn\u2019 as quickly or as intensely, meaning you can handle higher workout volumes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>5. Women can perform more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a45500117\/how-many-sets-per-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a45500117\/how-many-sets-per-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"reps and sets\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">reps and sets<\/a> before fatiguing<img alt=\"couple of fitness models doing the pushups\" title=\"couple of fitness models doing the pushups\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2119\" height=\"1414\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gettyimages-869062004-67f5146915e1a.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>franckreporter\/\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1x6ievd emevuu60\">\u2018Between the aforementioned lower blood pressure, more type 1 muscle fibers and higher levels of anti-catabolic oestrogen (which prevents muscle damage), females are able to perform more reps and sets, even with heavy lifts, before reaching fatigue, compared to men.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1x6ievd emevuu60\">\u2018Keep in mind that while studies show that both men and women typically lose 3-5 per cent of muscle mass per decade after the age of 30 (a process known as sarcopenia), this accelerates when women begin going through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a41639225\/menopause-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a41639225\/menopause-exercise\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"perimenopause\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">perimenopause<\/a> and experience declining levels of oestrogen. Building a strong base of muscle mass through regular strength training before you hit this age will help calm this rate of change.
