{"id":90752,"date":"2025-05-10T18:55:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T18:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/90752\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T18:55:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T18:55:12","slug":"it-was-embarrassing-because-i-bought-a-mate-a-sandwich-and-it-looked-like-i-couldnt-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/90752\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It was embarrassing because I bought a mate a sandwich and it looked like I couldn&#8217;t pay&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The entire town has become a signal dead spot, and locals are sick of it<\/p>\n<p>17:11, 10 May 2025Updated 17:11, 10 May 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2_Image-of-Middleton-town-centre.jpg\" alt=\"Middleton town centre\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Middleton town centre(Image: Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People living in Middleton have struggled for years with a problem that would baffle many modern day residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The area that sits between <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/rochdale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochdale<\/a> and Manchester has become a signal dead spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Strolling through the market town, depending on your mobile phone network, you might see the little bars in the top left corner of your device looking minimal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Not having mobile signal is something you could expect in the remote corners of the Outer Hebrides, but in a town six miles from one of the largest cities in the UK, it seems bizarre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The reason for the recent problems is due to vandalism at a mast on the top of the Warwick Mill in the centre of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/middleton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Middleton<\/a>, according to local MP Elsie Blundell.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2_WarwickMill.jpg\" alt=\"Warwick Mill in Middleton\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Warwick Mill in Middleton(Image: Middleton Guardian)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After complaints from constituents, the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/heywood\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Heywood<\/a> and Middleton North MP investigated the issue and found out the damaged mast provided crucial coverage to the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She has since been working with telecoms company Cornerstone and Rochdale Borough Council to replace the mast &#8211; or find another solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For locals basking in Middle Garden\u2019s Spring sunshine, this is an all too familiar issue. They just want the inconvenience to be over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ashley Wakefield lives in the town centre area, he says it\u2019s been a problem for around three years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_IMG_2680.jpg\" alt=\"Ashley Wakefield, sitting in Middleton town centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Ashley Wakefield, sitting in Middleton town centre(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt can be a struggle to get 4G and ring people,\u201d he told the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Manchester Evening NewsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Evening News<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m a foster carer, so it\u2019s a real problem for me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere have been times I\u2019ve had to go into the shopping centre to use the Wi-Fi to get my bus pass to work. It\u2019s super inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt has been a big thing for a while and it\u2019s spoken about a lot as an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He explained that even at his house the signal can be weak. Ashley even had a friend who changed his phone contract just because of the poor network connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Just a few benches down, young couple Jack and Nicole take a break from their lunch to weigh in. It\u2019s peaceful for an hour for lunch, but I need to do my job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cMy boss lives in the middle of nowhere and gets a better signal than here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nicole added: \u201cIt\u2019s awful. But it\u2019s not always been an issue, as it was fine when she first started working in the town centre four years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s 2025 and we haven\u2019t got phone signal here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Pat Vanvolsem, who lives in Alkrington, came into town for some shopping, but she\u2019s never had a connectivity problem. Though the pensioner admits she never uses her phone when in town &#8211; she\u2019s focused on the task at hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She told the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"M.E.NLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">M.E.N<\/a>: \u201cI didn\u2019t know there was a phone issue. For the younger generation connectivity is of the utmost importance &#8211; so it\u2019s a hot topic at college, they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIf you want to send a message it definitely impacts you,\u201d Liam explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Weighing in, Mackenzie joked: \u201cOnly on the outskirts you can get a signal, so it\u2019s best to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">So many people said they\u2019d have trouble using their phones, but for businesses it is a bigger issue. He came up the road with the machine in his hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt was embarrassing because I bought a mate a sandwich and it looked like I couldn\u2019t pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_IMG_2681.jpg\" alt=\"Yours Phone Shop, Middleton Gardens, Middleton\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Yours Phone Shop, Middleton Gardens, Middleton(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ali Salam, who runs Yours Phone Shop on the high street, confirmed transactions for card payments can be a struggle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The businessman said: \u201cI\u2019ve been told that the signal is a problem. Lots of people say it&#8217;s because it\u2019s a hilly area here but there isn\u2019t a lot of info as to why it\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIf you ask 10 people about this, nine will be complaining. I get people asking to sort their phones as a result. Sometimes transactions are tricky for mobile banking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Peter Winkler from Sign &amp; Print Direct said his business had to install guest Wi-Fi to sort out the problem.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_IMG_2686.jpg\" alt=\"Peter Winkler, from Sign &amp; Print Direct in Middleton\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Peter Winkler, from Sign &amp; Print Direct in Middleton(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe print there because a lot of people don\u2019t have home printers anymore,\u201d Peter said. \u201cThey come with what they want to print on the phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe\u2019ve had to set up a guest Wi-Fi network because the signal is so bad. Prior to that we\u2019d have to suggest leaving the shop to get a signal &#8211; which seems counterintuitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next steps<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_EB-phone-in-Middleton.jpg\" alt=\"Elsie Blundell, MP for Heywood and Middleton North, holding up her useless phone in Jubilee Park\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Elsie Blundell, MP for Heywood and Middleton North, holding up her useless phone in Jubilee Park(Image: Elsie Blundell )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Just before <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/easter\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Easter<\/a>, Mrs Blundell managed to secure a meeting which brought together Cornerstone and Rochdale Borough Council. They agreed to work together to solve the problem for residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After agreement on all sides, the MP is hopeful that a strategic approach to mobile connectivity, working in-hand with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/andy-burnham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Burnham<\/a>\u2019s team, can address issues like digital poverty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Elsie Blundell, MP for Heywood and Middleton North said: \u201cAs the MP, out and about in Middleton, I noticed there were a lot of comments and complaints from residents and businesses about the mobile signal. So I decided to look into it, ordering coverage maps from the House of Commons Library, asking experts from the industry and so on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;After chasing the mobile companies for several months, I was finally able to meet with Cornerstone and understand the problems that had been occurring with their mast on top of the mill. Vandalism by a small group of people had left an entire town at risk of being disconnected and losing mobile signal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We all take our mobile signal for granted, but it\u2019s actually extremely important to people and for commercial businesses to operate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Obviously, I\u2019m angry that some heartless vandals could do that to our town. More importantly, though, we needed to find a replacement, soon, to get the town working again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There is an ambition to see a proposal and planning permission for a new mast quite soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A Cornerstone spokesperson said: \u201cAt Cornerstone, we recognise that mobile infrastructure plays a visible role in the communities we serve, and we take that responsibility seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cEngaging with local stakeholders is a fundamental part of our approach.
